In 1998, I started tutoring 3 young kids just to earn extra money as a high schooler, and by 2002, I was doing this as as a full time career with 20+ regular students. Who would have thought that tutoring would become my passion?

Throughout all these years, I have taught kids as young as 4 years old to college students. I absolutely love that even when I tutor the exact same subject 20 times, each time is new and interesting because each student has a different personality, learning style, and challenges.

For the past 15 years, I've had the pleasure of tutoring hundreds of wonderful students. I truly feel that they have been a blessing. Whether I worked with highly motivated students who would one day enter prestigious colleges like Harvard, Brown, UCLA, Emory, UC Berkeley, or UPenn, or helped those who are barely passing (or failing) their classes to pass to see and understand the joy for their subject, it was always fun and fulfilling work.

I believe that a good tutor has to be knowledgeable, personable, and caring. Even if one of those aspects is missing, it won't work out. My years of experience has taught me to be able to meet my students where they are. My goal is to find the best way my student learns so that I can productively teach them to become successful in their studies.

Because of the many years I've taught, I am well-versed in the school curriculum changes like Common Core and high school programs (AP/IB). I also specialize in college entrance strategies and standardized tests like SAT, ACT, SAT 2, ASVAB, TOEFL, SSAT, ISEE, HSPT, etc. I'm also experienced teaching the NEW SAT and PSAT as well as the essay changes in the ACT.

I see the big picture in helping my students achieve their goal. I've helped many students win scholarships and awards, and improve GPA in untraditional ways to dramatically increase their chances of college acceptance.

With new students, I have free initial consultation to meet and get to know the student, diagnose his/her current skills, discuss strategies, set cur

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

I have gone through ESL/ESOL process since I came from Korea when I was 8 years old, so I know what it's like not to learn a second language. Because I can empathize with them, I have had passion to help those to learn English as a second language whether they are kids or adults. For each student, I focus on the topics that he or she needs and wants such as speaking, writing, listening, reading, TOEFL, etc. I also incorporate a lot of fun into our lessons so that my students can look forward to learning English.
Grammar,

Grammar

Although not taught directly at school, grammar is an important part of understanding the English language. Having good grammar skills will help with SAT Writing or ACT English as well as improve writing skills. I have taught grammar for 10+ years of parts of speech, proofreading, and sentence corrections.
Korean,

Korean

I am a native Korean speaker fluent in Korean in speaking, reading, and writing. I have worked as a translator and interpreter in both church and professional setting in the last 10 years. I have taught Korean both individually and in Korean School classes to second generation Koreans and those who just have interest in learning the language. With academic learners, I focus on listening, reading, and writing so that they can prepare and succeed in their Korean classes and Korean SAT 2. For casual learners, we focus on listening and speaking so that they can clearly communicate with others in Korean. I incorporate books, songs, videos, and conversations to keep the class active and fun.

Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

Elementary Math begins with basic number knowledge up to being able to solve complex pre-algebraic questions. I can help your student learn to solve both numerical problems as well as develop problem solving skills. Success in math is not only succeeding in current studies, but building skills to succeed in the future. As a tutor who has over 13 years of experience and knows all the math concepts up to high school and standardized testing, I teach my students so that they can be prepared for what's ahead in the future.

English

ACT English,

ACT English

80% of ACT English is being able to recognize grammatical mistakes and know how to fix it. The rest of it has to do with understanding the stylistic or organizational mistakes of the passage. Having taught this subject for over 10 years, I can teach you exactly what grammatical concepts to know so you will have the highest chance of getting the best scores.
ACT Reading,

ACT Reading

ACT Reading tests by giving four different types of reading passages (Prose, Humanities, Social Science, and Natural Science) and asking critical thinking questions from the passages. Because it gives more questions and reading passages compared to the SAT Critical Reading section, students must learn to be able to read quickly and answer questions. Unlike the other subjects, ACT Reading doesn't have one strategy that works for everyone; every person have different reading levels so the lessons are very individual oriented. I have taught this subject for over 10 years, and I can create a program to cater to your needs in order for you to succeed in ACT Reading.

English encompasses so many things: phonics, speaking, listening, reading comprehension, vocabulary, writing, critical reading, analysis, etc. I have taught students as young as kindergarten all the way to college level in English to improve the skills that they lack.

SAT Reading,

SAT Reading

SAT Reading requires not only reading comprehension, but critical reading skills. To improve the SAT Reading score, the most important skill to hone is actively reading, not passively reading. It's also important to be able to read between the lines and find the author's purpose and theme of the passage. I teach strategies to find these easily and improve reading skills.
SAT Writing,

SAT Writing

SAT Writing test has one 25 minute essay and 2 multiple choice section that tests grammatical errors in sentences and passages. In the essay section, I focus on making sure that the student is able to write a coherent and thoughtful essay in 25 minutes. Unless the student is ESL, I've never had a student score less than 5 (6 is the perfect score). As for the grammar section, I teach the often tested grammar rules so that my student understands the concept completely.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Most students learn Algebra 1 during the middle school years. I have taught this subject in the last 13+ years more times than I can remember, and I know which areas students struggle the most. I will teach Algebra 1 completely so this will become a foundation so the student can succeed in Algebra 2, which builds upon the previous Algebra 1 knowledge. Also, for the advanced students, I will help you to solve application problems that will help you for future SAT/ACT Math questions.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

Usually, students will learn Algebra 2 in their high school years. Understanding Algebra 2 is quite important since success in College Algebra and/or Pre-Calculus depends on understanding Algebra 2. Also, ACT and SAT Math both test Algebra 2. Having taught this subject for over 10 years, I can help you whether you are struggling on this math subject or want to ace it.

Geometry is a very interesting math topic, since it's positioned between Algebra 1 and Algebra 2, and it teaches completely different topics than the Algebras. For some, it's hard to understand and visualize 2D and 3D shapes drawn on the paper as well as memorize numerous formulas. However, it is quite possible to get good scores in SAT Math with practice and understanding of the types of questions. I have taught this subject for over 10 years and helped many students succeed.

I wish we found her earlier.

We have been through at least 5-6 tutors in the past 4 years and with Hyo for the past 10 lessons. She is the most resourceful tutor I have had a chance to work with. Also well organized, offer measurable result ( That works best for my 13 years old), add sense of humor along the lessons. Just awesome!

Hyo is very knowledgeable and gave me a lot of encouragement.

She taught me to have more confidence in myself. She helped me review for the ACT testing and I really learned a lot, she gave me a lot of encouragement. It was a really good review for me plus she helped me brush up on a lot of subjects. She was very patient and her learning skills helped me focus, it was good because it was one on one and knowing I had to go see her pushed me more because of the homework. I really enjoyed her and highly recommend her to anyone and will gladly go back to her if needed. Thank you Hyo!!
