Hello! My name is Virginia and I am an experienced Language Educator. My specialties are American Sign Language (ASL) and ESOL.

I possess a M.Ed. in Teaching Additional Languages and for the past 15 years, I have helped students gain and improve their fluency in their target language whether that was through formal instruction as a teacher or through tutoring sessions. Some students that I have had the pleasure of working with have moved on to pursue careers related to the target language, such as Interpreting, Special Education, or Deaf Education. There is nothing more rewarding than to see or hear about former students taking off with their language fluency and being excited to do more with it!

Over my teaching and tutoring career, I have taught ASL and ELLs (English Language Learners) of various ages and abilities. I have experience working with international students, students with learning disabilities, as well as students with deafness. I am patient and understand that there is not a one-size-fits-all approach to education. Thus, I strive to tailor my lessons to align with my students’ learning styles, needs, goals, and preferences.

My journey to ASL fluency started in high school. I immediately fell in love with the language and culture. I then enrolled at Gallaudet University (a Deaf university) and gained fluency through immersion and continued to study the language and how to teach languages through my graduate studies. I know first hand that learning a language takes time and dedication. Instructional time and homework assignments help guide students toward achieving fluency but it is through immersion in a language that they can achieve fluency. I understand not everyone has the opportunity to learn ASL through immersion like I did, however, I encourage my students to immerse themselves in ASL and Deaf Culture by using the language in everyday situations and getting involved in the Deaf community. Teaching ASL and watching my students grow and excel in their language development is one of my greatest passions! Some of my specific qualifications to teach ASL are: Demonstrated fluency in ASL for almost 20 years, involvement in the Deaf community for almost 20 years, possession of a M. Ed in Teaching Additional Languages, and 15+ years of experience teaching/tutoring ASL.

Special Needs

Hard of Hearing,

Hard of Hearing

As an individual who is hard of hearing, I personally understand the unique communication needs of students with hearing loss. I am patient and can effectively and clearly communicate orally or through signs. I have experience tutoring Deaf individuals mostly in English and writing, however, I am qualified to tutor history. I enjoy working with Deaf/HOH students and am passionate about ensuring that they have equal access to language and education.

Knowledgeable and patient!

Virginia is a wonderful person and a wonderful teacher! My daughter who is losing her hearing at the age of 24 absolutely loves Virginia and so do I. She’s makes learning to sign fun and easy! We have come a long way, in a very short period of time!

Knowledgeable and Works Great with Teenager!

Virginia is great! In each lesson, she and my teenager cover about 40-50 new words! She uses themes for each meeting to help keep all they're learning focused each lesson. My 15-year-old loves learning ASL with her.

Great teacher!

Virginia helped my daughter gain a better understanding of vocabulary and sentence structure in just one lesson. We will definitely be working with her again! We’ve already scheduled it!

Perfect!!

I’ve been learning ASL from Virginia for about 2 months now and she has been a genuine superstar. I have 0 complaints. She handles everything so professionally yet personally. She’s super flexible with scheduling! She’s taught me not only the language but about the culture and history. She makes learning easy and doesn’t judge at all when I make mistakes. She’s affordable and effective. If you’re looking for a teacher, Virginia is the best in my opinion.

Amazing!!!

My friend and I have been learning ASL from Virginia for a little over a month now and all I can say is that she is one of the best teachers I have ever had. She is exceptionally kind, patient, and understanding. She teaches us vocabulary, history, and conversational ASL. She has gone above and beyond and is so understanding of scheduling issues. If you are looking for someone to teach you this fantastic language, look no further. Virginia is affordable, knowledgeable, and an exceptional teacher.

Awesome and knowledgeable tutor

Mrs. Virginia helped me review my ASL knowledge and explained it very well. She took time to explain noun-verb pairs, help me understand reading finger spelling, and helped me pass my quiz for FLVS. I highly recommend her as a tutor!
