Hello! My name is Nicholas G., and I’m a research ecologist with a PhD in Biological Sciences from the University of Illinois at Chicago. I began teaching elementary science over 10 years ago and I have 5 years of experience teaching at the university level where I taught Introductory Biology and Biology for Non-Majors. I'm also a happy recipient of my department’s Graduate Teaching Award and the “Honoring Our Professors’ Excellence” Award from my university. My approach to tutoring is similar to many other successful teachers: meet the students on their ground with empathy, patience, and an enthusiasm for learning! I am more than happy to work with you and share my passion for environmental science.

My specialization is in Ecology & Evolution, but I'm proficient with other subjects including cell biology, botany, and others. Whether you are experiencing a long-term struggle with a subject or just need to push through a couple assignments or tests, I can help! Effective tutors are adaptable to students’ personalized needs. Every tutoring session is an opportunity not just for the student to learn, but the tutor as well. The more we work together, the more effective the tutoring will be!

I began teaching at Arrowhead Ranch Outdoor Science School in 2013, where I held outdoor classes for middle school students on fundamental concepts in environmental science. I pivoted in 2015 and taught ESL abroad before returning to environmental science as a graduate student and TA. Getting a PhD in Biology also means becoming very familiar with scientific writing and statistics!

Tutoring is a part-time job for me, so I have a limited number of students I can teach. I also will have less availability if travel is required, but online tutoring provides greater flexibility. However, if you are committed to long-term tutoring (40 hours or more), I’ll put in extra effort to adjust my schedule to your needs. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me with any questions or concerns!

Data Science

Data Science

I have a PhD in Biological Sciences and have compiled, analyzed, and presented on numerous largescale datasets including a combination of plant trait data from multiple databases. I do most of my work using R. I'm completing a study using the Department of Energy's Energy Exascale Earth System Model using Argonne National Lab's Bebop Supercomputing Cluster. Data combination and statistical analysis are two of my great passions!

Guitar

I love guitar and first began playing in 2013. I took formal lessons, but I've found most of my skills come from playing songs that I loved. There are all sorts of tips and tricks to make playing easier that I would love to share! Please message me and we'll see if I am a good fit for your style.

Botany

My past research includes exploring plant-microbe-soil interactions across continental scale environmental gradients in Switchgrass, drivers of absorptive root variation in different plant functional types, and soil effects on White Cedar germination. I currently research grazing and drought interactive effects on grass and shrub productivity in the Chihuahuan Desert.

Chess

Chess

I am a local chess champion who first entered a chess club in 2001. My father began teaching me when I was 8 years old. I focus on a defensive approach that forces opponents into a drawn out game, and recognizing and utilizing opponents mistakes. Play the beginning like a book, the middle game like a wizard, and the end game like a machine!
