Hello!

I was a Master's candidate at Teachers College, Columbia University and I have a multidisciplinary degree from Case-Western Reserve University. During my years at Case-Western Reserve, I was a paid tutor in the Resident Tutor Program, a federal program which provided group and individual tutoring to public school students. It was a joy to watch those children progress from struggling and, sometimes, apathetic students, to students who became not only eager to come to class, but also made significant progress in learning how to learn. I have well over 2000 hours of recent tutoring experience (over 1000 hours of which is through WyzAnt) and have worked with students at all grade levels and levels of achievement.

To me, a key factor in student success is that the student is guided to find his or her own styles of learning and motivation. There are many ways to process information and to learn. Howard Gardner of Harvard University has identified at least nine distinct types of intelligence. I believe that helping a person find his or her own way to digest, process and retain information, and then to be able to effectively share that information, is a major responsibility of teachers, and, especially, of tutors who are asked to help to stimulate and improve the performances of individual students at every level.

One of my favorite tutoring successes was working for a period of time with a young lady who was struggling with reading comprehension, writing, and test-taking. She had no confidence in herself and was thoroughly frustrated with herself and her teachers. I helped her to break down her learning process into manageable and achievable goals, find her own way of learning, and then take those elements and apply them to not just basic reading and writing, but also to her progress in all areas of schooling. I am proud to say that this young lady graduated cum laude from one of the top schools in the country, went on to post-graduate school where she also graduated with distinction and is now one

Public Speaking

I have a great deal of public speaking experience. Some of the formal positions I have held which have involved public speaking are: VP, Program Development for the American Association of University Women; Programs and Special Events Coordinator for the GFWC Woman’s Club of Denville; VP, Programs for the Home & School Association of Morris Knolls High School; and spokesperson for the Statewide PSG Strategy Committee under the auspices of the NJ Department of Labor. In each of these roles, I have had the opportunity to write speeches and deliver them to groups ranging from just a few to hundreds of people. I enjoy the process of developing just the right tone and content for the audience to be addressed, and I am quite good at making both myself and my audience comfortable with the circumstance of being joined in the reciprocal tasks of compelling speaking and active listening.

Grammar,

Grammar

I have been a successful English Language Arts tutor for many years. I have worked with students at all grades and professional levels, and at all levels of achievement. In my view, it is critical for each person to be able to understand clearly and communicate effectively in his or her native or chosen language. The processes of understanding and communicating require the grasp of many elements, but key to all of those elements is grammar. Grammar is the glue that holds all of the other elements of communication together. My job as a language arts tutor is to help my students to understand the basics, and the dynamics, of grammar. I use a variety of resources and tools, many of which I have developed myself; however, I always work with each student from the standpoint of that student's particular level of learning, learning style and goals. I will develop new materials for a particular student, if necessary. I will, of course, work with a school student's course requirements, but, beyond, that, my goal is to help each student to discover her or his best way of learning and then to help the student apply that to English language arts and beyond.
Proofreading,

Proofreading

I am a well-experienced Language Arts tutor, with a specialization in writing. I have worked as a proofreader in academic education, in the legal field, and in several other industries. In addition, I have helped to edit many papers, applications, and works for publication for high school, college, and post-grad students, including my own during my Honors Research appointment at Case-Western Reserve University and graduate work at Columbia University.  I would be happy to review your work (of whatever type) to make certain that it is mechanically perfect and that it transmits the exact message that you want to convey. I am competent with using many 'voices,' and feel comfortable with most subjects.

Vocabulary

[Please see my NOTE at the bottom regarding my hourly fee.] Broad and precise vocabulary is one of the key factors in effective communication. I am a well-experienced English Language Arts tutor and I work with all of my students, at all levels of competence, to improve their vocabulary skills. I use an online interactive program on which I develop vocabulary lists that are relevant to various student levels and goals. However, I don't just leave it at basic definitions - I edit my students' entries to help them to understand the connotations of words (what they really mean, as spoken or written) and how they can be most effectively used to communicate not just a correct, but a pinpointed, meaning. I work with students at all levels of education or professional development, as well as with some ESL students, to help them to achieve this dual task. [NOTE: If the student's goal is strictly vocabulary enhancement and does not include reading comprehension or writing support, then I would be willing to adjust my hourly fee. The lessons would be mainly via the interactive site, with occasional personal communication via Skype or the WyzAnt online platform.]

ACT English

I have years of experience in helping students meet language arts and writing requirements for many testing situations, including standardized tests. All of my students have been able to greatly improve their standardized test-taking in these areas, and several have risen to achieve perfect language arts and essay scores. The ACT English Test uses a multiple-choice format that tests the students' knowledge of the basic English conventions, as well as contextual word use, evidential writing, and expression of ideas. I have developed clear and comprehensive study tools to help my students understand each of the elements being tested and to then reintegrate that learning into the passage editing format of the exam. [NOTE: I have included comments on the ACT Writing test (essay) here, as there is currently no separate category in which to comment.] With regard to the essay, I provide my own materials and detailed instruction to help my students to thoroughly understand the essay requirements and how to write for the exam to maximize their scores. I make sure that each student becomes comfortable with using her or his own writing strengths, in combination with specific reading and analytic skills, in order to be able to create an effective and convincing essay which will meet the new ACT criteria for excellent essay content and composition.
ACT Reading,

ACT Reading

My tutoring background includes many years of teaching reading at all levels, and for various applications, including standardized testing. I focus not only on the each student's strengths and weaknesses but also on the specific requirements of the particular exam. All of my ACT students who had previously taken the exam improved their scores, many quite significantly. I provide targeted lesson materials and work closely with my students to help them understand how to identify critical detail, how to recognize and interpret an author's style and tone, and how to critically read in order to infer, analyze and compare. I also stress building a strong vocabulary; however, I work with my students to help them learn ways to figure out unfamiliar words and choose correct answers in context. I coach my students to recognize "key words" as well as certain “tell” words that are invaluable in understanding the reading passages. My goals are to help each student feel confident in approaching the ACT Reading section and to become a better critical reader in general.

I use a very targeted approach in teaching students the process of creating writing that is relevant, creative and thorough. As for standardized testing, the students I have worked with have all significantly raised their writing (and reading) scores during the course of our work together. Thorough, Reliable and Compassionate Tutor...Highly recommend!

Julie has been working with my son for several months now, and his writing and comprehension skills have grown tremendously. Julie is a very thorough tutor, she will make sure that he completely understands and comprehends the lesson before moving on, no matter how long it takes him. I also appreciate her lesson reviews that I receive from her, because as a parent we all know that we don't always get all the information from our children and this allows me to know exactly what they are reviewing. I highly recommend Julie to anyone who is looking for a tutor for their child in these areas!

Fabulous tutor!

Julie is a fantastic tutor! She asked the right questions which gave her the info she needed to hit the ground running. After just one lesson, my daughter felt that she learned a lot. Thank you, Julie! She explained everything clearly, made sure each concept was understood before moving on to the next and has printed material to study and focus on. We continue lessons and my daughter loves it! Fabulous tutor! LK

Great tutor

Julie has great patience with my grandson. He can be very excited about learning and is eager to please. She has focused his energy, strengthened his skills and moved him ahead in his learning. The lessons are focused on his weaknesses and enhancing his strengths. The work is fun and challenging. In the short period of time Julie has worked with him, we have seen great leaps in his skills.
