Hello,
My name is Melissa and I am a certified literacy specialist, general education teacher and special education teacher. I am a current middle school teacher and I have been tutoring for the past seven years. I tutor all elementary subjects. In grades middle school and above, I only tutor in ELA (reading, writing, etc) including teaching English proficiency to children and adults of all ages.

Over the course of the last several years, I have tutored a wide variety of people including those ages 2-50 years old. I have worked with English Language Learners ranging from zero English proficiency who are usually new to the country, to those who need help reading and writing in the language more. These students had a diversity of home languages including but not limited to Spanish, Urdu, Ukrainian, and Mandarin. I have also worked with a variety of Special Education students with classifications including but not limited to Learning Disabled, Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, Speech and Language, and Intellectually Disabled.

I am aware that everyone is different, therefore you cannot expect everyone to learn the same way. Because of this, each lesson is catered to your student's needs by building off their strengths to provide explicit instruction to their areas for improvement. I use a plethora of teaching strategies, including using hands-on teaching that is fun and engaging for students of all ages. I am open to using outside resources and collaborating with parents and teachers. I am available to tutor in person. I will usually respond to contact in less than 12 hours, but 24 hours the latest.

I completed my bachelors degree in elementary education where I took several courses on common core curriculum. Then I started working in school districts where I teach lessons that revolve around Common Core State Standards on a daily basis. I have tutored students using these standards to assist them in what they were learning in school.

I have been tutoring students in reading for five years. All of my students have met their academic goals whether that was to catch up to their peers or get ahead. My best success case was a second boy that was three grade levels behind when we started in the beginning of June. By the end of August he was on level with his peers. I have even taught as a reading teacher in a local school district.

As an experienced tutor it is my job to enforce productive study habits for my students. Everyone has a study habit that works best for them. Flash cards, reading over notes, practicing the material, and even making study games are all important aspects of the study process. I believe in positive reinforcement to encourage students to use these habits independently so they can take these study habits with them through adulthood.

I have created many tools to help my students remember how to organize their writing as well as how to check their writing for errors.

Special Needs

ADHD,

ADHD

I am a certified special education teacher with my masters degree. Seeing as ADHD is a subset of special education classified under OHI (Other Health Impairments), I am certified to teach this through NYS (New York State). I have been teaching special education students for several years in a variety of teaching positions. These positions include resource room, self-contained classrooms, AIS classrooms, and inclusion classrooms. I believe you should work with students disabilities rather than against them. I do this by using a multi-sensory approach to teaching. This includes using several different kenestic and tactile learning activities to increase student engagement.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD),

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I am a certified special education teacher with a masters degree. I have taught a variety of special education classrooms over the last half decade. This includes resource room, self-contained classrooms, inclusion classrooms, and AIS intervention services. I have had several students diagnosed under ADS (Autism Spectrum Disorder) in each of these settings. I believe in using a very systematically structured multi-sensory approach to teaching. This includes using structured schedules, visuals, kenestic and tactile learning activities and much more. I often give my students resources to aid them in their learning needs. For example, I made an emotions chart for one of my students this year who struggled identifying a characters emotions throughout a story.
Dyslexia,

Dyslexia

I am certified to teach both general education and special education students which is crucial in teaching students with dyslexia because they may fall into either classroom setting based on the severity of the case. I also have my masters in reading where I have taken several courses on teaching students with learning disabilities such as dyslexia. I have also had several hands on experiences teaching students with dyslexia in resource room as well as in reading pull out services.

I am a certified special education teacher through NYS with a masters degree. I have been teaching for half a decade in a variety of special education classrooms. This includes resource room, self-contained classrooms, inclusion classrooms, and AIS intervention services. I believe in using a multi-sensory approach to teaching including kenestic and tactile learning activities to increase student engagement. I also believe that mistakes are proof of learning and should be seen as such. Children require patience, kindness, and positive reinforcement activities to help them meet their full potential.
