Darling Hammond in her book the Flat world and Education, states that “At a time when children of color comprise a majority in most urban districts and will be a majority in the nation as a whole by 2025, we face pernicious achievement gaps that fuel inequality short changing our young people and nation. “ There’s this perceived notion that schools provide equal opportunities for all. However, we need to realize that some schools especially the ones in urban neighborhoods don’t have the resources students need to further their education.I believe my role as a High school social studies teacher is to help my students overcome these obstacles by providing them with a vibrant learning experience. It's my responsibility to lead and encourage students to excel academically. In my class room I will incorporate many hands-on activities, and culturally responsive classroom strategies.
