Hi! Thanks for taking the time to look at my profile. Let me tell you a little bit about myself to help you decide whether or not I'm the right tutor for you.

Hi! Thanks for taking the time to look at my profile. Let me tell you a little bit about myself to help you decide whether or not I'm the right tutor for you.

I taught high school English in Campbell for seventeen years before taking a sabbatical this year. I've taught primarily 10th and 11th grade literature, but I have also taught 9th grade and ELD (a.k.a. ESL). My two greatest passions as a teacher are helping kids to discover a love of literature and teaching kids how to be effective, eloquent writers.

Before I was a teacher, I was also a reading/writing tutor at a clinic for students with learning disabilities. In addition, throughout college I was a nanny for a family with three young children, two of whom had learning disabilities, and one of my primary responsibilities was to help them with their school work.

I have a BA with Honors in English Literature from UC Santa Cruz, where I fell in love particularly with Faulkner, Twain, and Tolstoy. I took and passed the CBEST on 12/6/03 in the process of getting my teaching credential. I received a scaled score of 79/80 in the reading section, 70/80 in the math section, and 75/80 in the writing section, for a combined scaled score of 224/240.

Great English Tutor!

When we met Alison two semesters ago, our daughter was struggling with essay-writing and she was pretty stressed out. Her high school is very demanding and has very high standards for essays. Alison, who is an English teacher at another local high school, was able to teach our daughter, step by step, the fundamentals of writing, how to write effectively, elegantly and clearly. Alison is very patient, knowledgeable, and friendly. She is also very flexible and accommodating to our schedule. Under Alison's guidance, our daughter improved quickly and earned A's in most of her essays. Her interest in English became much stronger because of her. We are very grateful and we would highly recommend Alison for any tutoring needed for English.
