Bio

Hi! My name is Gina. I have a bachelor's degree in Physical Geology and master's degree in Geology. Petrology is the study of the origin and composition of rocks and that's where the geochemistry comes in.

My specialties are volcanology (the study of volcanoes), petrology and geochemistry (the chemistry of rocks). Petrology is the study of the origin and composition of rocks and that's where the geochemistry comes in.

I enjoy teaching and have a lot of experience working with students. I am currently a teacher with Truckee Meadow Community College's Community (Adult) Education program. Within that program I organize and teach classes in geology and lead geology field trips. I also teach Japanese language, shibori dye work and sashiko embroidery. I am part of the rotation of part time faculty available to teach formal classes in the Physical Science department and have taught Geology 101 there. I have the qualifications to teach Chemistry 101, too.

I am a certified camping and backpacking instructor with the Girl Scouts.

I believe that a good tutor or teacher will not only teach their students, but will also inspire curiosity and the desire to learn. Memorization and review are important for remembering information but experiments and hands-on work are crucial to developing understanding and enjoyment in all subjects.

During college, I was a proof reader for a computer company; I read their documents and reports and corrected grammar, spelling and diction. I am now using those skills to proof my church's newsletters and publications.

What else can I teach?

I can teach students how to take good notes, cultivate good study skills, research and write papers and give PowerPoint, oral or written presentations.

I can tutor for any of the earth science classes (geology, earth science, physical science, chemistry), teach the scientific method and help with experiments and projects. I am also very good at mapping and field work and can teach or review different techniques in geologic mapping. I know many fun science projects that teach basic science concepts.

I have a broad range of computer r

As a graduate student I taught the college's "geology for non-geology majors" lab class. As a result I know a lot of hands-on projects related to science (and most especially geology) as well as teaching methods to help learn and memorize scientific concepts.

Found my child's weak link!

My child is a high achieving senior in high school. Even though he does well in school, I did not feel he was able to interpret literature at a college level. Gina was able to quickly identify the problem and taught him how to heighten his understanding with some pretty simple reading techniques. After 3 sessions he is actively practicing these techniques on his own and is even showing my younger daughter what Gina taught him. I am now confident my son is ready for college next year! Thank you Gina!

Gina is awesome!

Gina gave great explanations on our topics surrounding the colorado plateau, Grand Canyon, rock layers, etc. Gina is great at going into detail about specific topics that help me understand geologic vocabulary, time eras, and more specifics about identifying rock layers.

Very Patient!

I learned more from one session than I have in 4 weeks of geology class! I brought in pictures of sedimentary rocks that were not the best quality. She did a great job of identifying rocks and structure despite the pictures being so bad. Great session thank you!

Very Knowledgeable

My daughter has struggled with chemistry since last semester because her teacher is not very good at explaining things. He is brilliant but not that great of a teacher. One session with Gina and she finally understands some of the basics of chemistry that is essential to go any further. My daughter loves her!!
