About Kristine

Bio

After thirty years as a teacher at a Quaker independent school in suburban Philadelphia, I am now tutoring students in writing and research. I believe everyone can learn to write by understanding the process of writing and practicing the necessary skills. Good writing sometimes seems like a mystery to students because they often haven't been shown the steps to move from idea to finished essay. I know I can help students feel more confident as writers.

My experience working with students from middle school through college has included assisting college students with research papers; helping high school seniors develop powerful personal essays for college admissions; teaching students literary analysis, grammar, reading, and study and organizational skills; working with students from China who attend U.S. schools; and teaching a "head start" seminar in Beijing for Chinese students coming to school in America. I know strategies to improve students’ work and help them develop more confidence in themselves as writers and researchers.

I hold a B.A. in English with additional work in Religion and History from La Salle University. I have an M.A. in English from SUNY Buffalo.

Literature

As C.S. Lewis writes, "Literature adds to reality, it does not simply describe it." I have a passion for sharing my love for books with students. Books can be windows or mirrors. Windows to allow us to experience the rich life of people unlike ourselves; mirrors to reflect on our own observations and the world we know. Learning to read critically is a skill that enhances and deepens our understanding of all texts and leads to a richer experience of literature.

Nothing is more critical to academic success in high school and college than the firm command of writing skills. School work is language based, and the more competence a student has, the more success that student will enjoy. I teach writing as a process. A student learns not to respond to one assignment, but to think like a writer and to develop fluency at the sentence, paragraph and essay levels.

Experienced and patient

Kristine has been an exceptional resource for the host daughter. My host daughter is from China and a freshman at a private school in PA. Kristine is helping her with writing. Sentence structure, verb tenses, capital letters, punctuation and citing sources are all tricky concepts for most Chinese students. Kristine is using her years of experience with other students to help my daughter navigate her new school and country.
