Hello there! My name is Michael R., and I am a trombonist/arranger/educator in the PA/NJ area. I love music and I love teaching even more. In 2015, I graduated from the University of the Arts with a degree in Jazz Performance and a minor in music education. I am currently in a master's program for Music Education at University of the Arts and I am loving it. As a musician, I've had the opportunity to play at the Sydney Opera House, Carnegie Hall, all throughout Italy, and I've toured the U.S a good amount, playing in New York City, Syracuse, Rochester, Burlington, Boston, Oswego, Delaware, Washington D.C, Los Angelos, etc.

My job is nothing more then to help students discover the beauty of music and how to acquire it for themselves. I always try to acknowledge to every student that even if they try their hardest and get stuck, its okay because it is more about the effort being put that you grow from rather than the actual performance or lesson. I like to set expectations for my students based on their individualized growth and development as musicians.

My experience as an educator is from just teaching private lessons and running jazz combos for the past 5 years. I have always felt that being a well trained musician is the most importatnt part about being a teacher. You need to be well versed at your craft to convey what you want to your students. This is the preparation all teachers should hold themselves to. Personally, I play regularly with groups such as: EBE Barcelona, Swift Technique, The Phonies, Whoaphat BrassBand, etc. I also perform with my own original jazz group in the Philadelphia/South Jersey area. I also write quite a bit which keeps me busy. I think teaching is what motivates me to do all this, so that I can be the best teacher I possibly can!

On a more personal note, I am not the most high energy teacher. I don't yell or get mad. I am calm and I really just try to accomplish as much as I can in a lesson. Sure, we can have fun but I have a lot to offer and sometimes it just feels like a

Composition (Music)

Composition (Music)

I have training in classes such as orchestration, arranging, jazz theory, etc. I also have studied composition privately for the past 4 years with great composers such as David Bennett Thomas, Norman David and Evan Solot. I've written all kinds of works, big band, classical, funk, you name it! I also freelance as a horn chart writer for many of the local wedding bands and cover bands. I've tutored all kinds of students in theory, transcription, composition and musicianship and a high school and collegiate level.

Piano

Piano

I began taking piano lessons at the age of 12 till I was 14. I began to focus on other instruments as a focus at the time, but I still played. When I came to college, I took a year of classical and a year of jazz piano class. When I went for my masters, I had to play the piano and run a chorus which is being your own accompanist. Also when did my student teaching in fall 2015, I was doing group lessons of different instruments and I would be reading a full score and playing their parts on piano. This meant I would be transposing multiple instrument parts at the same time and playing them with the students. I have also played some gigs on piano, mainly backing singer songwriters.

Ear Training,

Ear Training

When I was in college taking my two years of ear training courses, I learned that I had perfect pitch. This is very useful in teaching ear training because I will always have the correct answer. Also I can help show students how to tackle music and harmony in many settings (classical, jazz, etc.) . I have taken about 5 levels of ear training courses and two transcription and analysis courses. I also freelance writing music compositions for people so all my ear training skills are being used, Examples are available on request.
Guitar,

Guitar

I have taken guitar lessons since the age of ten. I play open mic events and play acoustic at some local coffee shops. Even though trombone is my main source of income, guitar is still one of my passions.

Trombone

I have played trombone for 15 years and went to college for jazz trombone. I currently play professionally and teach privately. I'm also going to graduate school for music education so tutoring is my focus now!
Trumpet,

Trumpet

I have played trombone for 15 years and went to college for jazz trombone. I currently play professionally and teach privately. Something that I've learned is that brass players share common mistakes I have taught many trumpet students because of this and been able to get them achieving at a high level. I also play trumpet with my students and can adequately show them proper technique and musical expressions.

Fun and productive first lesson

My son, who has been playing for 4 years, enjoyed his first lesson with Michael. He made it fun, while being able to quickly assess what level he was at with trombone and then teach him new skills. Looking forward to continuing to work with him
