Hi! I'm Rachel, a first-year student at NYU's Stern School of Business studying Finance and Statistics with a joint minor in Computer Science and Math. A typical session will be structured around the student's homework assignment-- as we work through it together, I can gauge which concepts need further explanation/practice and will take time to ensure your understanding beyond the problem itself. I find students learn really effectively when I explain a concept, walk through an example, and then offer them a similar problem to complete by themselves. I'll then give a few examples that don't follow the rule or need additional steps to reinforce the student's understanding.
I have several years of tutoring experience with high schoolers working on SAT test prep, math ranging from Algebra 1 to Calculus BC, and private debate coaching. I have helped my students jump from straight F's and D's to A's in various math courses/exams in just one semester and earn max score on PSAT/SATs.
Other experience includes 5 jobs (Starbucks barista, skating coach, waitress/hostess, Kumon Math/Reading tutor, childcare assistant) where I've developed strong communication skills, along with an ability to adapt to different people-- including students. I earned 1580 SAT (790 R&W, 790 M) and graduated HS with 4.6/5.0 weighted GPA.
I really enjoy tutoring because I feel teachers have one of the longest lasting influences on how their students think and the type of mindset that guides their life, far beyond the classroom. I find it so fulfilling to be a part of this learning process and to tangibly impact students like I once was! Please feel free to message with any questions, I'm excited to meet & work with you =)
