I studied both neuroscience and music at a liberal arts college (graduating magna cum laude), and I went on to get my master's in TESOL (teaching English as a second language). I have a voracious appetite for learning and I enjoy fostering that same natural curiosity in the students that I tutor.

Because I have a love for learning and sharing interesting information, I frequently led study groups, both large and small for my classes in college - including English, psychology, and neuroscience. I often proofread students' papers to help students improve their grammar, clarity, and style (both MLA and APA).

I have been teaching piano, voice, and music theory since 2010, combining both serious study with room for creative expression. Generally, I have taught beginning to intermediate voice and piano and I have tutored up to 3rd semester theory (for college). The best kind of learning is when the teacher enables their student to become self-sufficient and to follow their own intuition.

Ballroom dance also has been a passion of mine since high school and I have co-taught classes and tutored individuals since 2006. Swing dance - including east coast, west coast, and lindy - is my specialty, but I also have experience in foxtrot, waltz, salsa, rumba, and tango. By focusing on the basic essence of the dance - the rhythm and the style - I try to inspire students to become both creative and proficient in their dancing.

I enjoy coming up with creative methods that help the student make their education their own. I always try to emphasize the wonder and beauty in the subject and work off of the student's inner motivation to discover it for themselves. If provided with the proper tools and presented with an intriguing challenge, I believe that students will become motivated and excel.

Ballroom Dancing,

Ballroom Dancing

I started teaching ballroom dance in 2005 and haven't stopped since. I have co-taught classes at recreation centers and at my college, and I have given several private lessons to individuals and couples. My specialty is swing - east coast, west coast, and lindy hop - but I also have a broad knowledge of salsa, foxtrot, waltz, rumba, and tango.
Drawing,

Drawing

I have taken classes in drawing for many years. Some of my skills include sketching, cartooning, and storyboarding for film. I gravitate towards charcoal, but also use pencil, pen, chalk, and oil pastels. My favorite type of art combines creativity and realism, so I tend to emphasize expressing images through imagination and technique. Some of the things I could help you learn are form, shading, perspective, tone, color mixing, texture, and use of light.
Salsa Dancing

Salsa Dancing

I started salsa dancing in 2005, under the tutelage of a competitive dancer. Ever since I took private lessons, I have co-taught classes and done several public demonstrations in Latin, smooth style dancing, and swing. When I teach dance (Salsa or otherwise), my main focus is on building the lead-follow relationship and being sensitive to your partner. You can learn fancy steps and patterns from the internet, but being a strong, confident dancer comes from experience dancing and being in-tune with your partner.

Public Speaking,

Public Speaking

Public speaking and performance has always been a large part of my life. Ever since I was a kid, I was involved in Toastmasters for young adults, TAing classes, being a captain for sports teams, and performing on stage. In my adult life, I have taught many classes, performed with musical groups, made formal presentations, and facilitated many discussions. Through my studies in psychology and practical experiences at internships, I have insight into the connection between body language and how people receive your message. I approach public speaking from the point of understanding your audience before you speak and then knowing how to present yourself confidently while gauging and adjusting to their reaction.

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

From my childhood until I went to college, my family always had foreign students living with us. The students came from all over the world and had completely different ways of communicating. Some had only taken a few months of English, and we had to be very inventive to understand simple concepts. Others students had taken English their whole lives and wanted to learn slang and polish their American accents. From personal experience, I know how difficult it is to learn a new language and I am very patient and understanding. It is always my privilege to help others learn my native language and walk with them through their journey of learning a new language. I try to understand where my students are coming from - culturally and personally - so that I can help them learn in meaningful ways. My primary foreign language is Spanish, but I started learning Chinese as well while I was getting my master's in TESOL (teaching English to speakers of other languages). Some of my students are beginners, but many are students and business people. I tailor each lesson to the needs of my students and am a very flexible teacher. I assess what my students need and can teach anything from ABCs and pronunciation to business English.
Grammar,

Grammar

Throughout high school and college, I have taken several courses and workshops in grammar, writing, and style. I am an experienced proof-reader and I edit everything from book reports to college research papers. Some common questions that students ask include "Why does paragraph have to be at a certain length? What is a split infinitive and why does it matter? Why should passive tense be avoided?" I can explain the concepts in a practical, relatable way, and I enjoy sparking a student's interest in the logic behind grammar.
Proofreading,

Proofreading

Proof-reading can be fun! Seriously. Editing and re-writing are essential to producing quality papers, and I've been doing both for years! Working alongside you on your project, I can target and help you to rescue areas in technical, stylistic, or ideological distress. I have plenty of experience writing and editing papers in different disciplines, so I am familiar with MLA and APA formatting. In addition, I am a writing coach to several authors who are producing full-length stories and novels. Operating on both a micro and macro-level, I help guide my students as they produce well-written, cohesive, and compelling stories. I love drawing out the creativity in my students!

Elementary Science

I adored science as a kid and I was fascinated with astronomy, geology, biology, and zoology growing up. Homeschool,

Homeschool

Not only have I been teaching homeschool families since 2015, I was a homeschooler myself from 3rd grade through high school! As students are engaged in personalized, mastery-based learning, their interests transform into an academic enterprise. Through project-based learning, students learn how to think critically, apply creativity and fun to academic rigor, engage with challenging ideas, and even develop interpersonal skills and compassion. I look forward to brainstorming with you and developing a learning plan that fits your child's needs and learning style!
Study Skills,

Study Skills

Along with practical experience in organization and active reading, I have taken several workshops and read many books on study skills. Regardless of the subject I am teaching, I always incorporate effective study strategies into the curriculum. I cover topics like organizational techniques, scheduling, designing a study space, note-taking and effective reading, alternative study strategies based on learning style, starting study groups, and getting the most out of independent learning (in a homeschool setting).

I strongly suggest studying Latin, Greek, and/or the romantic languages concurrently, but no previous experience is required!

Classics

I have a passion for the classics in many genres of literature, spanning from fiction and non-fiction works, to theology and philosophy, to science. Throughout my time at Westmont, I led students in discussions and helped them with their papers on classical literature in all areas of academics (everything from Jane Eyre to Helmholtz's paper on the speed of nervous conduction). As a tutor, I help students deconstruct arguments, critically evaluate the material and themes, wrestle with the worldviews of the authors, and verbalize their position on the author's arguments and voice their own opinions. I also studied classical literature in depth through Biola University's 3 year Torrey Academy program. Some of my favorites that we studied include works by the Inklings (C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, Dorothy Sayers, etc), great American thinkers (Abraham Lincoln, Booker T. Washington, Emerson, Thoreau, etc), and ancient thinkers (Plato, Dante, Augustine, Chaucer, etc).

I have also taken a philosophy course from the standpoint of psychology, which provides another interesting twist and additional insight into the history and implications of philosophy.

I originally intended to study biology when I went to college, so I took a year of college biology and chemistry, along with many other science classes like neuroscience and experimental psychology. Biology is so beautiful, symmetrical, and logical, and I get just as excited talking about the over-arching themes as the intricate details.

Science

Anatomy,

Anatomy

Because I studied neuroscience in college, my specialty is the nervous system, including the eye, the CNS, and the PNS. However, I have an affinity for general anatomy and physiology, and I've taken courses in biology, chemistry, anatomy, and physiology.
Biology,

Biology

I originally intended to study biology when I went to college, so I took a year of college biology and chemistry, along with many other science classes like neuroscience and experimental psychology. Biology is so beautiful, symmetrical, and logical, and I get just as excited talking about the over-arching themes as the intricate details. In college, I covered all levels of biology spanning from chemicals, to cells, to simple organisms, to complex organ systems, to populations, all the way to ecosystems. This is one of my favorite topics to teach!
Chemistry,

Chemistry

From personal experience, I know how daunting (and even boring) chemistry can seem at first, second, and even hundredth glance. Because I originally intended to study medicine, I took a year of chemistry, along with my courses in neuroscience, biology, and psychology. Both semesters I received an A, mostly due to my extremely creative ways of learning the material. Because chemistry is intensely interesting and logical, I try to demystify this enigma and show how it interacts our everyday lives.
Philosophy,

Philosophy

Throughout high school and college, I have taken several courses in philosophy, including honors classes through Biola's Torrey Academy. I am well acquainted with ancient and modern philosophers, logic, ethics, teleology, metaphysics, pragmatism, phenomenology, existentialism, structuralism, and more. I have also taken a philosophy course from the standpoint of psychology, which provides another interesting twist and additional insight into the history and implications of philosophy.
Psychology,

Psychology

My bachelors is in psychology - with an emphasis in neuroscience - and I am a member of the psychological honors society Psi Chi. I have taken classes and tutored classmates in general psychology, experimental psychology, cognitive psychology, neuroscience, and history and systems of psychology. I've also done several research projects and dabbled in Matlab and SPSS, so I could help with brainstorming and carrying out research.

ADHD,

ADHD

Many of my family members, friends, and students have ADD, so I have quite a bit of experience working with people who think outside the box. When working with students with ADD, I emphasize structure and repetition, while valuing their creativity. My enthusiasm for learning and tendency to have fun during lessons can also help homework seem interesting and spark student's curiosity. I am always amazed by the innovative intelligence that students with ADD can have and I love helping them optimize their talents.
Dyslexia,

Dyslexia

I have grown up and worked with several brilliant people who happened to have dyslexia. When I have tutored people with dyslexia before, I have encouraged them to use auditory tools to learn and express their knowledge, like audiobooks, verbal testing, etc. I believe that every student deserves a fair chance to demonstrate their knowledge, if not in writing, then verbally.
Special Needs,

Special Needs

I studied psychology at Westmont and have had a lot of personal interactions with people who are considered special needs ever since I was a child. Over the years, I have worked with people who have learning disabilities, mental disorders, and physical limitations. I consider it a privilege to work with people who have special needs and I admire their tenacity and ability to persist when faced with challenges. It takes a lot of courage to fight back and I will be one of the first ones to encourage you and to cheer you on! I love coming up with creative ways of learning that will help people succeed and maintaining a sense of humor while learning.

Fitness,

Fitness

I have taken college classes on fitness, I have assisted teaching PE classes in everything from Tae Kwon Do to ballroom dance, and I am CPR, AED, and First Aid certified. I also have taken many supplemental classes like anatomy and physiology, biology, and psychology, which help me to be a better fitness instructor. I was an athlete and junior lifeguard before college, and currently I am an avid dancer and outdoor enthusiast. I know how to train, to eat right, and to use weights. When coaching people, I am very enthusiastic and supportive, yet I am firm and help guide them to their physical goals.

Sewing

I have taken sewing classes for many years and I am comfortable using a sewing machine and sewing by hand. Some of my projects have included making jackets, dresses, pants, purses, quilts, padded cellphone covers, and even small tents. My favorite part of sewing, and my specialty, is tailoring and modifying clothes. I work on everything from hemming, replacing zippers, and repairing knitted items, to completely changing the look of clothes. I love the challenging art of modifying clothes and the satisfaction of creating exactly what you want!

ESL/ESOL,

Piano

Ever since 2010, I have been a piano teacher in both home and professional settings. I teach beginning to late-intermediate piano to any age that is willing to learn. While helping students improve artistic expression and technical skills, I cover everything from tone to theory. I minored in music in college and took classes in theory, history, and teaching music. I have studied classical piano for 6 years, and I also know how to improvise with chords.

Spanish

¡Hola! ¿Qué pasa? I have been tutoring Spanish for several people since early 2012. I've taken 5 years of Spanish (up to level II in college). While I am not a native speaker, I excelled in my classes and can help you to become proficient in pronunciation, grammar, sentence construction, as well as connecting vocabulary with English terms and concepts.

I have taken many courses in grammar, writing, and style on a high school honors, bachelors, and master's level. English has always been a passion of mine and I really enjoy helping others gain a love and proficiency for writing well. I am a very experienced proof-reader and, even as a college student, I was sought-after to edit and help re-work papers in both MLA and APA formatting. Topics I typically cover are syntax and grammar, generating and following a thesis, style and structure, and readability. I can help with research projects in a variety of disciplines as well. Currently, I am also coaching several students who are writing full-length stories and novels. I love drawing out the creativity in my students!

A very bright tutor, her style of teaching is captivating!

Great Lesson! Sharon is a multi-talented young woman and has many gifts and talents to offer. She has a unique quality about her that is captivating. Since working with my son, who is in the eight grade, I have witnessed him gain confidence in subjects that were once overwhelming for him. His test scores have improved and he moves with a little more momentum. I especially appreciate her patience and creativity when teaching new concepts or subject matter. Sharon is very knowledgeable and her enthusiasm for learning is contagious! Sharon's style of teaching is effective and direct. I believe my son is becoming more self directed and will continue to see success through Sharon's teaching methods.

Extremely Patient and Knowledgeable

I have been struggling on general chemistry since the class has started in august. I had not understood most of the chapters that my professor had gone over with us. I was able to get in contact with Sharon and she was able to explain all the information, that we had gone over in class, within a two hour time period. She not only answered any of my questions but she took notes on a shared doc which allowed for me to have a copy of any information we went over. She went over each concept until she knew I understood. I never felt rushed or overwhelmed as I had in my class. I highly recommend Sharon as now I am not only able study organized information but I am able to understand it.

Our daughter likes her, so far they're just "feeling things out".

Sarah doesn't know what to expect. She has a lot of information to digest in a relatively short time. Sharon seems to have a plan and is very organized with her approach.
