Hey there! I'm Kyle, a Caltech biology grad with work experience in aerospace engineering, particle physics, synthetic biology, track & field coaching—even lighting design for live concerts! I got my start by teaching guitar in middle school, but I've spent the past 6 years working as a tutor, college counselor, and essay reviewer. Tutoring has included preparation for the ISEE and SCAT tests, as well as subject-specific practice, studying for the SAT, creative writing, and general homework help for students across the spectrum of backgrounds and neurotypes. I’ve worked with students as young as 5 and as old as 22, from across the L.A. area to universities in the Midwest, even all the way to Beijing!

Test Scores:
SAT: 2230 [Math 780, Verbal 750, Writing 700]
ACT: 35
AP: 5 in all subjects [Calculus BC, Statistics, Chemistry, English Language & Composition, English Literature & Composition, and European History]

I pride myself on being able to adapt to a variety of learning styles, personalities, and needs. My Caltech education was fortunately both broad and deep, and both my work and life experiences have allowed me to meet people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out—I look forward to helping you get to where you want to be!

Elementary Math

Beyond my test scores, I was placed in an advanced algebra class as a kindergartner and spent my elementary years stepping out of class every week with four other students in the school to compete in the Continental Math League, an elite mathematics competition for youngsters. I also participated in my middle school and high school math teams, taking 3rd place as an individual at our regional MATHCOUNTS meet. My coursework at Caltech covers material up to and including ordinary and partial differential equations, as well as linear algebra and proof-based calculus.

I have a B.S. in biology from Caltech and three years of laboratory experience in synthetic biology. I am the 3rd author on a paper in Cell Systems on properties of genetic circuits. My B.S. in Biology from Caltech drew upon coursework from the Genetics and Molecular Biology tracks in order to fulfill my degree requirements. Working in a prominent synthetic biology lab, I was trained by a physicist-turned-biologist and mentored by a former mathematics major who found novel ways to approach biological research.
Chemistry,

Chemistry

As part of my studies in biology, a significant portion of my coursework encompassed chemistry, including Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, and Physical Chemistry, while my 5 years of research experience in a wet lab required me to put those skills into play. On the relevant tests at the high school level, I scored 5 on the AP Chemistry exam, as well as 800 on the SAT II Chemistry exam.

Physics

My degree required a fundamental level of understanding of physics, including five terms of coursework in classical mechanics, special relativity, electromagnetism, wave mechanics, and quantum mechanics. Additionally, I spent two summers as an intern for an aerospace engineering firm testing rocket engines and designing a new type of igniter, as well as an additional summer interning at Project IceCube, a consortium of universities searching for neutrinos using an observatory at the South Pole.

Cooking

Cooking

As a Caltech undergraduate, I had the opportunity to take a wide variety of courses in unique subjects. After taking the cooking course, PA016: Cooking Basics, I worked as a teaching assistant for the class for nearly 4 years, as well as volunteering as an assistant cook for a plethora of events--most recently a 15-course charity dinner for some kind folks from JPL! While not a master chef by any means, I'm familiar with a wide variety of styles and techniques at a working level. Styles covered included Italian, British, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Mexican, Russian, Southern, Lebanese, and Argentine, with my teams incorporating additional elements of Vietnamese and Danish cuisine in their "Iron Chef"-esque final exam.
