Bio

My enthusiasm for teaching ancient languages comes from my passion for the languages themselves, in which I have thirteen years of formal training. I began my tutoring career by volunteering at a local middle school when I was still in high school studying for my own AP exams, but even as I worked to graduate magna cum laude and earn my Master's degree, I continued to tutor Latin and ancient Greek to high school, college, and even fellow graduate students. I have tutored students of all ages...

My enthusiasm for teaching ancient languages comes from my passion for the languages themselves, in which I have thirteen years of formal training. I began my tutoring career by volunteering at a local middle school when I was still in high school studying for my own AP exams, but even as I worked to graduate magna cum laude and earn my Master's degree, I continued to tutor Latin and ancient Greek to high school, college, and even fellow graduate students. I have tutored students of all ages and proficiency levels, both in formal settings as The George Washington University's official Latin and ancient Greek tutor as well as in informal settings outside of the university.

I know from personal experience and from over a decade of tutoring that ancient languages can feel like a frustrating, and at times overwhelming course of study. For this reason I have developed a variety of ways to make Latin and ancient Greek more digestible and approachable for students who might not otherwise be familiar with such complex languages. Just a few of the strategies that I have found can improve a student's enthusiasm for the subject and retention of the material are mnemonic devices, visual aids, and even songs. Because learning these languages requires a certain degree of rote memorization and a lot of practice, I also find that it is incredibly important for the student to put in his or her own effort outside of lessons in order to solidify his or her grasp of the material. For this reason I assign relevant homework assignments that reinforce new concepts as well as aid in memorizing important elements of grammar and vocabulary.

I appreciate any feedback that a student has to offer in order to continue improving as a tutor. I require 24 hours notice for a cancellation, but am happy to work with students to reschedule and will gladly travel for my students' convenience.

I am fluent in all dialects of ancient Greek including Attic, Ionic/Homeric, Aeolic, Doric, and Koine and have read a vast quantity of ancient Greek literature in the original language for college and graduate study.

I received my Master's degree in Latin and ancient Greek from the Catholic University of America in the Fall of 2015 and received my Bachelor's degree in Classical Studies from the George Washington University in the Spring of 2012. While at the George Washington University, I was the three-time recipient of the Staughton Prize, the university's oldest academic award, given to the top Latin student at the university each year. I have been tutoring classics and classical languages for over a decade, both privately and as the George Washington University Language Center's official tutor of Latin and ancient Greek. I am fluent in all dialects of ancient Greek including Attic, Ionic/Homeric, Aeolic, Doric, and Koine and have read a vast quantity of Latin and ancient Greek literature in the original languages for college and graduate study.

I am so very lucky to have found a scholar like Joshua to teach Classical Greek to my child. He is professional, knowledgeable and patient. His passion for the subject is infectious.
