About Margaret

Bio

I am retired from teaching all levels of high school math, including calculus. My most recent position was at an American school in Switzerland with American students from selective prep schools in the U.S. I have taught in independent schools in several states. I have tutored students, both in groups and individually in subjects and also for PSAT, ACT and SAT math tests. I will help a student, but I expect the student to be willing to work hard and to be ready to learn. I have kept...

I am retired from teaching all levels of high school math, including calculus. My most recent position was at an American school in Switzerland with American students from selective prep schools in the U.S. I have taught in independent schools in several states. I have tutored students, both in groups and individually in subjects and also for PSAT, ACT and SAT math tests. I will help a student, but I expect the student to be willing to work hard and to be ready to learn. I have kept abreast of new developments in the teaching of math and am familiar with a wide range on the books used in high schools today. The school in Switzerland was a semester program where students brought their own books, so I have taught from as many as 20 different books in use in schools today.

I have taught Algebra 2 for many years and using many different books-or no book at all. I am familiar with most calculators used in Algebra 2, or can work without a calculator.. I have worked with many students at this level, some advanced, some needing help to understand the complications of mathematics.

I have taught Geometry, including proofs, for over 20 years. I try to have my students see proofs as puzzles and have fun doing them. I warn students to think about relationships, not merely memorize theorems.

I work to give students a real understanding of the relationships that tie the various topics in precalculus together. I want the student to find patterns that apply to many topics rather than memorizing how to do each problem. I would like for my students to learn to enjoy math.

Superb job! Margaret is currently tutoring geometry and we hope she will help us with algebra 2. She's very personable, kind, patient, and knowledgeable. She is also quite familiar with the text books we are using, and is keeping my daughter motivated. We couldn't be happier.
