Hello, and thank you for reading my profile. I am currently working as a substitute teacher, and I am a retired educational diagnostician. You may ask, "What is a diagnostician?" A diagnostician is the person, along with the school psychologist, that tests students (IQ and achievement, usually) for eligibility for special education services. It is a great skill because I am fortunate enough to be able to help students reach their maximum potential, regardless of any disabilities they may have.

I possess a masters' degree in special education, and I have taught all grades, from K through college, although I'm most successful with middle school through high school-age students. My specialties are SAT/ACT preparation, math (algebra, geometry, etc.), and written expression. Nearly all my students have shown improvement in their overall understanding of the subject, their test and report card grades, and, most importantly, their ability to succeed independently. I'm quite proud of my previous success teaching at Sylvan Learning Center as well as in students' homes, which is where I enjoy the most success.

In conclusion, I am grateful to be a part of a student's education. My first priority is to teach how valuable learning can be and that it is a lifelong process for every successful person. Teaching has been the most rewarding part of my entire working life, and I hope to continue well into the future.

Elementary Education

Elementary (K-6th),

Elementary (K-6th)

I've taught and tutored first through 12th grade students with great success. My background in special education has also helped me achieve success with students with dyslexia, ADHD, and specific learning disabilities. Methods I have used include research-based techniques for phonetics (e.g., Wilson), increased comprehension (e.g., guided reading), and fluency (paired reading, choral reading, etc.). I am dedicated to your child's success in lifelong reading.
Phonics,

Phonics

My background as a special education teacher and diagnostician has given me many opportunities to teach a wide variety of students to read. Basic Reading depends on good phonological skills, and those skills are developed through the effective use of attaching unique sounds to each letter of the alphabet. Certain students with dyslexia find that phonics is difficult and can be the hardest part of their reading. There are many tools available to help students develop good phonics skills. The most important aspects of their successful use is consistency and practice. Over time, the challenges of learning phonics can be met with a thoughtful, patient guide.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

One of the most difficult skills to master is the ability to effectively study and comprehend what is being read. For too many students, studying is a dreaded chore with countless preconceived notions about "cramming" in a locked room with a book and a light. Using techniques such as Cornell or SQ3R, studying can become much more process-related with short bursts of energy separated by periods of rest/reinforcement. Each student requires different things to trigger the learning/remembering process.

My background consists of many years of corporate training, public school teaching, private/home school tutoring, and special education teaching. In addition, during my undergrad and graduate studies, I have completed many Math, Algebra, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, and Statistics courses while I maintained a 3.9 grade point average. I currently hold a Master's degree in Special Education and a Texas teaching certificate as well as a certificate as an Educational Diagnostician. It is very rewarding to teach/tutor Algebra, Geometry, and SAT/ACT preparation - especially when I can see positive results and an increased pride and confidence in my students.

I have been playing guitar for well over forty years. Although I'm mostly self-taught on the guitar, I have been classically trained on piano and trumpet. I can help students learn how to read music, form chords to accompany themselves or others, play in a band, and learn songs by ear and from sheet music. I have experience in the recording industry, and I still occasionally perform live in local clubs.

My background and experience as a dianostician has helped me become an effective educator for students who are struggling with attention and distractibility issues. There are a number of proven techniques that have come into wide usage that I have embraced over the years. Although each student is unique in his/her needs, please know that there are ways for all students to overcome obstacles to their learning.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

My familiarity with students with Autism Spectrum Disorder has been developed not only from experience (I have both taught and worked with students), but also from my studies (I have a master's degree in special education), as well as assessments as a certified educational diagnostician. I have found that each student is unique and, especially with the variability of Autism in each student's case (e.g., severity, level of functioning, etc.) there must be a concerted effort by both parents and educators to find what strategy/ies will lead to successful learning for that particular student. I enjoy that challenge, and I welcome the opportunity to help in any way I can.
Dyslexia,

Dyslexia

As an educational diagnostician, I have tested, worked with, and taught many students who exhibit symptoms of dyslexia. This condition can cause problems with decoding letter symbols, reading fluency, pronunciation, and especially writing/spelling. Although it is not considered curable, its effects can definitely be overcome with practice and perseverance.

Teenagers love him!

We hired Bill for SAT Math tutoring for my son - H.S. senior. He really liked Bill, his personality, his humor and worked very well with him. We had 3 sessions with Bill in one week (even though it was a bit of a drive for Bill) and taught my son the strategies and "tricks" of the SAT Math. My son felt much more confident in taking the SAT for the 2nd time after working with Bill. He raised his math section score by 70 points!

1st Tutoring Session

My daughter said to rate him at 5 stars, he was easy to understand, he did not make feel dumb and He overall did a great job at explaining the fundamentals of Algebra. She would like a few more sessions with Mr. Bill and I agree! With the COVID-19 Mr. Bill came on time with a mask prepared and prepared to tutor. It was a pleasurable first session and we look forward to more session with him.
