Hello, I am an Arkansas-Certified Social Studies teacher. I am 51 years old, and received my teacher's license in 2011. Hello, I am an Arkansas-Certified Social Studies teacher. I am 51 years old, and received my teacher's license in 2011. My first career was in manufacturing, in which I owned my own business in Knoxville, Arkansas. I have always enjoyed teaching in one capacity or another and am very good in one-on-one situations. Since I obtained my teacher's license I have done a lot of substitute teaching including a long-term social studies substitute position at Dardanelle High School. My internship was at Russellville High School, in which I received compliments for my work with small groups of students (1-3). I like getting to know students individually and I believe this helps to make me a good tutor.

I have been writing and analyzing writing for much of my life, and I consider myself a good proofreader. I can train students to do proofreading of their work and that of others. I am fairly well read, and am familiar with a most of Shakespeare's works, as well as other literature. I myself have extensive experience in public speaking, and I am a good coach for both beginning and advanced students of public speaking.

I have a passion for history, and am well-versed in both American and European history. I understand two critical things about teaching history: One, it is not a subject that is everyone's passion, and different people have different areas of interest. The second is that I have a good sense of what is really important to know, of what makes the subject meaningful. The trick is always to try to make history relevant and somehow engender a desire in students to want to know the "story", whatever that happens to be.

Please contact me via e-mail at any time and I will be glad to answer your questions, or schedule a lesson. I really like working with students on an individual basis. I am knowledgeable in all areas of the social studies, including geography, government, and economics, in addition to history. I think I have a good sense of what students need to know, and when. I hope I have

Public Speaking

Public Speaking

I have been engaged in public speaking since I was a student in junior high school. I won second place in a Virginia State Forensics competition during my senior year. I have spoken publicly in various forums throughout my career, both as a business person and as a private citizen. These forums include educational training sessions, in business settings, at civic club gatherings (e.g. Kiwanis, Rotary) and at public meetings, and in church settings (lay reader). I am very comfortable with public speaking, but also understand and know many of the issues that tend to inhibit people, such as nervousness, technique issues, common mistakes and bad habits, and so forth. I am comfortable in positively critiquing all students and providing coaching support. In the process of completing the requirements to obtain a teacher's license, I took a (required, but most helpful) course in public speaking at Arkansas Tech University. My method for coaching is generally to listen carefully, make notes as needed, and then to provide positive encouragement and feedback, while analyzing various parts of the speech or performance given. I cover all areas, from speaking mannerisms to content to delivery, habits, appearance and so forth. As needed, I will work on 1, 2 or more issues, in order of importance, requiring practice and repetition until success is achieved, or a reasonable imitation thereof.

ACT Reading,

ACT Reading

I have long experience with reading and reading for tests, such as the passages typically found in the ACT test. I have developed techniques over the years for quickly getting the main ideas and important points and making sure I understand the questions being asked. It is all about practice and working at it. It involves being alert, being to able to do a little bit of speed reading, and anticipating from a quick read what the author is likely intending to convey, and finally, making sure one reads questions carefully in order to answer accurately. It does take work, but I believe anyone can improve their ACT experience.

Writing,

Writing

I have been writing extensively since I was in junior high school. Good writing and powerful expression are my passion. The quality of my writing has evolved and improved greatly since my high school and college days. Experience and constant reading have taught me to refine my writing down to the simplest, clearest expression of an idea. In analyzing my own writing and that of others, I firmly believe that logic and flow of ideas and argument matter above all.

Geography,

Geography

I have been interested in political and physical geography since I was a boy. My interest covers both the United States and around the world. Being an avid consumer of the news for the last 35+ years, I have gained a reasonably good knowledge of world geography. I have travelled around parts of the United States and have been to the United Kingdom on several occasions. I taught a semester of world geography as part of a long-term substitute teaching assignment at Dardanelle High School in 2012-2013.
Political Science,

Political Science

I have been interested in government, government policy and politics all of my life since I was old enough to understand the news. In undergraduate college I took many courses in political science including American foreign policy. I have been an avid follower of all news in general since I was a teenager, and political news and commentary in particular. In 35+ years of observation of America and the world, I have gained a good understanding of governments, policy issues, foreign affairs and the political motivations of peoples both in the US and around the world. When discussing political science issues, I believe I have a fair ability to distill the subject down to the essence of the matter under discussion, and I am good at looking/explaining all sides of an issue if I am familiar with a particular issue.
Religion,

Religion

In addition to being well versed in the news of the day and familiar with world affairs, I have on occasion made a study of religious issues in history. As part of my student teaching internship at Russellville High School, I taught a semester of World Religions under the tutelage of Paul Gray.
Social Studies,

Social Studies

I was a history major in college and currently hold an Arkansas standard 5-year Educator's License in Secondary Education Social Studies. I am well versed in the subjects of history, government, geography, economics and civics. During a long-term substitute teaching assignment at Dardanelle High School in Dardanelle, Arkansas, I taught 9th grade Civics, Economics, 10th grade World History, and World Geography in an Alternative Learning Environment. I have a passion for all of the Social Studies.
