I've always loved science and majored in biology in undergrad. By the time I was a senior, I was a docent in a natural history museum and had helped many friends improve their grades in biology, chemistry, and math. After graduation from University of Michigan, I continued studying to get my teaching certificate. I moved to Georgia and started teaching in 1986 and haven't looked back, earning my M.Ed. in science from Georgia State.

While I enjoy being a classroom teacher, I find the most rewarding part of my work to be one-on-one instruction. I have achieved a lot of success with it. I find that taking the time to listen to a student and then taking the time to make sure that the student understands makes all the difference.

I try to find out where a student is: What do you understand and where is it that you get lost? So we start there, using what a student does know in an interactive way, to make that connection.

Owning the discovery helps students with their confidence. When it's math, I want to see the student do the work. They can watch me all day and they're not getting anything. I need to see that they can accomplish the task themselves.

Learning shouldn't be a chore and I find that understanding the individual needs of a student can make all the difference in his or her love of learning. One size really doesn't fit all when it comes to education.

Highly recommend Martha

Martha has been great with our son in tutoring Algebra II. He has connected with her in a way that is different and more effective than his regular teacher which has proved to be beneficial in his understanding of the subject matter. Martha has become a consistent staple in our household as our son continues to improve in his studies of Algebra II.

A well experienced and supportive tutor.

Martha was of great help to me over the semester of my college chemistry course. I had withdrew without fail the first time around, and passed the class with flying colors with her help. I went from scoring 50% and 60% grades on tests the first time around, to scoring a 95% on my first test with the help of her. She is very patient, and kept whatever pace I chose to go at each session. She is very knowledgeable with the subject and even gave me tips on how to make learning a particular thing easier or easier to memorize. Besides being good at teaching the material I presented to her, I felt that she actually cared about my education and progress in my class. She always wanted to hear about how class went, and wanted to know the grades of my tests as soon as I did. I felt that she wanted me to succeed and I gained confidence in the class just through that. Martha is a wonderful person and teacher; I would suggest that anyone looking for success in chemistry (or math, I'm positive she is great at that too) that they should definitely use her help.

Excellent Chemistry Tutor

Martha is an excellent tutor! If I could I'd have her tutor me in every subject. She explains things in an easy way for me to understand. She's very patient and always willing to fit me in her schedule. After our first session I made a 100 on my first quiz and an 86 on my first test. She's very encouraging and makes Chemistry fun!
