ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

I have extensive experience tutoring ESL/ESOL students including those who required help comprehending materials required for school and professionals who wanted to improve their written and oral presentations so that they were comparable to that of their peers and colleagues. I volunteered at the Literacy Councils in New Orleans and in Norristown, both of which attracted many ESL students. English is among the most, if not the most difficult language to master and I make every effort to explain that to my ESL students. I have ESL lesson plans; grammar worksheets; and other materials that are designed specifically for those for whom English is not their first language.

I was an Editor for nearly a decade, specializing in college, professional, and medical textbooks. My expertise in this area is due to purblishers' requirement of Editors' full understanding of complex subject matter in order to correct errors and inconsistencies as well as perform substantial revisions/rewrites. It is a mandate that no grammatical or punctuation errors be in any published textbook, so I have had extensive experience that exceeded anything beyond post-graduate study. My biggest objective is to help my students find confidence and joy in reading and writing as well as to learn all rules governing proper language use.

My greatest satisfaction is in seeing the pleasure experienced by my students when they begin to improve their comprehension and discover the enjoyment that comes from reading.

I emphasize maximizing the use of time; focus on eliminating distractions by helping them create a proper work environment; and help develop improved retention, among other skills. I am a published author of professional articles. My writing and editorial skills address a broad-spectrum of students, from middle through high school as well as college to professionals. I enjoy assisting those who struggle to express their thoughts on paper. I ensure that all of my clients/students are made aware of all elemenst of proper language use - grammar, punctuation, elevated vocabulary, etc. I have found that these are not being adequately taught in most schools to today's students, which is the primary reason so many are unprepared to perform well in standardized tests - especially the SAT and ACT. Having been an Editor of college-level and medical textbooks for over a decade, as well as having been a foreign desk Editor for a major encylopedia and an Editor of military manuals for the Departmet of Defense (via Boeing), I was held to the highest standards that constitute the fundamentals governing proper use of the English language. This level of education is not available in any academic setting, and it can make an appreciable difference in the quality of material I edit and help rewrite. I have subsequently edited (and help compose) a wide range of materials, from college application essays to graduate and doctoral-level material as well as legal documents and medical monologs. A benefit I provide that most do not, is a complete explanation of why a correction was made or why proposed rewrire was made. I also forward related guidelines to assist student/client from repeating the same errors. Most editors (or, often English tutors who correct submitted work) merely correct mistakes - i.e., they do not provide any reason for the correction, so while the final work product may be error free, the student has not received any meaningful learning experience that would help prevent repeated patterns of errors. I also provide guidelines re: proper formal, academic writing; outlining; and other critical skills. I work with my clients/students on as many revised drafts as needed for their approval. I ensure that the final work product will be error-free, well-written, edited to specified manual style (e.g., Chicago; APA; MLA); consistent; fact checked and researched; and provided to client prior to deadline.

Knowledgeable and a great teacher

Trisha knows what and where the student is struggling and what exactly they net need to succeed. I liked her approach and the teaching style. She right away connects with the students and finds the weaknesses of a student.

Trisha goes above and beyond.

Her teaching doesn't stop when she steps out the door. Trisha has been absolutely amazing with my 17 year old daughter. Trisha is quick to recognize her strengths and weaknesses and goes the extra mile to ensure that she will accomplish more than imaginable. I am consistently impressed with the way Trisha maintains open communication between her and her students and she utilizes every email and conversation as a teaching/learning moment. If you want your child to be pushed, encouraged, driven... Trisha is the perfect choice.

Trisha really understands my son and is passionate about teaching within my son's weaknesses and making him feel good about himself. It is a wonderful sight to behold. We really enjoy her lessons. Amazing tutor! Highly recommend!

Trisha worked with my daughter in preparation for the SSAT test. Trisha was very professional, extremely kind, and exceeded my expectations. She sent a detailed review after each session that kept me advised of my daughter's progress and areas for continued work. She sent us online practice test which made it very easy for my daughter to complete and easy for me as I did not have to find the tests through my own research on the internet. Perhaps most important, however, was the relationship she quickly built with my daughter. Trisha is kind, builds on the student's strengths, and is genuinely interested in her students. This allows her to build a good rapport which makes the hard work of preparing for a difficult test or studying a challenging subject a bit more enjoyable. I would highly recommend Trisha to anyone looking for an amazing tutor in the area of language arts!
