About Joan

Bio

I am a retired Special Education and Elementary Teacher. I have degrees in Elementary Education with an endorsement in Special Education K-8 in Texas and K-12 in New Mexico. My Master's Degree is Educational Diagnostician.

I have been tutoring privately off and on for 15 years mostly in reading and math. I love tutoring because of being a first hand witness of that moment when students realize that they can read and can achieve in school.

I am a retired Special Education and Elementary Teacher. I have degrees in Elementary Education with an endorsement in Special Education K-8 in Texas and K-12 in New Mexico. My Master's Degree is Educational Diagnostician.

I have been tutoring privately off and on for 15 years mostly in reading and math. I love tutoring because of being a first hand witness of that moment when students realize that they can read and can achieve in school.

In one school district I taught 25 other teachers in reading methods. One of my students in this school district tested out of special education and was put back into regular education which was the first time that had ever happened in that district.

I teach all elementary subjects . I have taught almost all areas of students with special needs, including adults, consisting of ADD/ADHD, Aspergers, Autism, Dyslexia, Downs Syndrome, Learning Disabled and others.

I teach Phonics but with some students I use other methods. A love for reading is one goal for every student. I do testing in the first season to determine where to begin my lessons.

My students usually improve several grade levels in reading. One twelfth grade girl came to me reading third grade level and in ten one-hour sessions she was reading on a sixth grade level. Contact me and schedule soon. At this point I am open for after school tutoring and during the day for homeschoolers.

Exactly the results I was looking for

I hired Joan to bring my little one up to speed very quickly in reading. Joan assessed where my daughter was, put and action plan together and then measured the progress. It was fantastic to not only see instant results but to also see the results measured statistically. Joan tested my son and confirmed he is academically behind his reading level for 3rd grade. She also tested his auditory and visual skills and he was only able to hold 4 numbers at a time in his short term memory. She is planning to tutor him twice a week and check his progress after 10 lessons. She arrived on time, prepared and was very professional. We are hopeful she can overcome my son's learning struggles.

Joan has been a fantastic tutor who helped our son where so many were unable to. Her knowledge extends to so many areas and her methods are amazing. Within a visit she asked if we'd ever had Joshua tested for Scotopic sensitivity syndrome. I didn't even know what it was, but she was able to screen him and provide both a short term and long term solution that has moved our son forward like no other.
