I have a degree in Chemical Engineering from Northwestern University in Chicago. I have 6 years of classroom teaching experience and over 12 years of tutoring experience. My specialties are GRE, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physics, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, preCalc, and Calculus.

Since Covid my tutoring business has moved from 50% online to nearly 100% online. I have found myself tutoring students from LSU and Penn State to Florida State, New York University, Vanderbuilt, Emory and UCLA. I have tutored students this semester from Georgetown, Harvard, Stanford, and Berkely.

Often when a new student comes to me, they are overwhelmed and discouraged by the subject matter. With one on one tutoring I am able to taper the lessons to their learning style, which usually results in rapid progress. I find it very rewarding to watch my students discouragement turn into confidence as they master their subjects.

Personally, I have three children who were all Honors and AP students in high school. All three were given academic scholarships to college, and my youngest has a full tuition academic scholarship at Clemson University. My children have all kept their scholarships by maintaining their grades throughout their college careers. I firmly believe that setting high expectations leads to success.

My classroom experience was at Mauldin High School, Mt Zion Christian School, and Centrepointe Christian School. I have tutored live in Greenville County, SC as well as Rochester, NY and Lakeland, Florida.

I have tutored students from 3rd grade through college level, and worked with students from local community colleges and universities as well as local high schools and middle schools. I also tutor home schooled students and students taking online classes. If you would like references from any of many current or past students I would be happy to provide them for you. Contact me and I can help get you or your student on the road to success!

GRE,

GRE

I have tutored extensively for both the math and verbal sections of the GRE. I have helped my students significantly increase their scores, as well as gain acceptance into top graduate schools like Vanderbilt, Tufts, and Harvard. I recently worked with a student who wanted to get a perfect score on all sections of the GRE, and I was able to teach him how to do the most difficult quantitative problems including mixture problems and rate problems so that he could obtain his goal. I can give you guidance for just a session or two, or I can put together a comprehensive study plan over several weeks or months with drills and homework to keep you progressing between tutoring sessions. Please contact me for guidance if you are studying for the GRE.

While living in Morocco, I have had the opportunity to teach English to both children and adults. Most of my students did not know one word of English when we began lessons, they speak either French or Arabic. I have found it immensely rewarding to see how quickly my students have learned English, even without any words in common.
French,

French

I took 4 years of French in high school and one year of college at Northwestern. I never really became fluent in the language, though, until I needed it to communicate on a daily basis. Repeating drills out of a French book is completely different from watching a movie in French, reading a book in French, or having a conversation with a French person! While living in Morocco I studied French under a native French professor at Institut Francais Casablanca for 6 hours/week for two years, after which I passed my B2 test of fluency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. B2 is similar to the TOEFL for English. I have taught French in elementary and middle school and tutored middle and high school students for class or for the French SAT test. I still frequently read books or watch films in French and I thoroughly enjoy tutoring students in French!

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Algebra is one of my favorite subjects to teach, and I have had tons of Algebra students from middle school to middle aged over the years. Often the biggest problem is that the student is overwhelmed by the material and just does not believe he or she can conquer it. I love to hear them say, "That's it? That is so easy." Recently my new student with a 58 in Algebra got a 95, the high score in his class, on the next test. His parents were very surprised and very pleased. Another freshman who had failed algebra was scheduled to retake it her sophomore year. Instead, she took an online course, tutored with me over the summer, got a 90 on the EOC and an A in the class. She moved on to Geometry. Once a student finds success in Algebra, they often enjoy higher levels of math and even pursue careers involving math or technology.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I have extensively tutored Algebra 2 students in both high school and college with excellent results.
Calculus,

Calculus

Calculus is the ultimate in fun math. For many students it will be their last math class. Students at this level have a strong foundation and good study skills and are just looking for a little extra help. I recently had a Florida Southern student take the whole course condensed into 4 weeks in the summer! He had not taken a math class in two years. He tutored with me for the entire course and we moved from finding limits to the chain rule and integrals in just a few weeks. He got an A in the class.
Chemistry,

Chemistry

As a chemical engineer, Chemistry is a class I love teaching. I usually have 5 or 6 high school students and 5 or 6 college students each year. I am currently working with a premed student from University of Michigan and a summer student from St Pete College. I have also tutored Chemistry students from Stanford University, Pepperdine, Furman University, Emory, Berkeley, Harvard, and Clemson University. I have notes, slides, curriculum, and homework for many chemistry subjects including thermochemistry, oxidation reduction, and acids and bases. Whether you are stuck on stoichiometry, the ideal gas law, molarity, molality, or balancing equations I can help.

Physics,

Physics

Physics is a fascinating subject to teach and learn. It is around us all of the time and no human can get through a day without physics. I often get students who have tried 2 or 3 other tutors before coming to me. I have tutored physics students from Berkeley, Penn State, Northwestern, Georgia Tech and NYU, among others. My Berkeley student scored 40 points above the class average on one of her exams. I recently tutored Electricity and Magnetism to a Polk State student. She had a lot of anxiety about the class, could not do the homework sets, and had failed the first exam. She was so distraught she was not getting any sleep. I met with her 2 hours a week for the remainder of the semester. She got an A in the class. Please contact me for high school or college level Physics. I am looking forward to working with you!
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

Prealgebra is an important stepping stone to Algebra and the higher maths. If a student is struggling in Prealgebra it could mean they are missing some fundamental math skills and might consider weekly tutoring through out the semester.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

I have had several Precalc students in the past year, all with good results. Many students at this level just call me when they get into trouble, which is often when they get to series and sequences, logarithms, trig identities, or graphing polynomials with asymptotes. As a student I took a full year of Organic Chemistry for my degree in Chemical Engineering (I loved the class!). I also used my Organic Chemistry knowledge in the workplace at Dow Chemical and Solvay Polymer Corporation. I enjoy tutoring Organic Chemistry because it is a very difficult class for many students and tutors who can help are often difficult for students to find. A few weeks ago one of my organic students made a 100 on her test covering NMR, IR, and substitution reactions! I love seeing my students excel in Organic Chemistry. In the last year I have tutored Organic Chemistry students from Harvard, Stanford University, Vanderbilt, Furman, Clemson University, Northwestern, and Greenville Tech. I have also had several students work with me during the summer before their class begins to get a head start on material. I teach from the fabulous David Klein textbook. I have curriculum and problem sets to work on between tutoring sessions if requested. I have also tutored Organic for MCAT amd DAL, as well as the ACS exams. I can help you succeed in Organic Chemistry and I am looking forward to working with you!

Special Needs

ADHD

ADHD

I have had many special needs student success stories both in the classroom and in my years of tutoring. I was hired by the Rochester City School District to be a full time tutor for an autistic first grader in a mainstream Spanish classroom. When I taught at Mauldin High, a full third (over 50 students per day) of my classroom students were Resource with specialized IEP's. Often these students hold an extra special place in my heart. I often find ADD or ADHD students are smart, capable, and willing to work hard to achieve success. These students often just learn a little differently than the "norm" and have difficulty concentrating in a classroom environment. One on one tutoring with a tutor who is willing to adjust to a student's learning style can make all the difference! One ADHD student of mine was failing 5 of his 6 classes when he started tutoring with me three hours a week. He ended up with an A in Science and B's or C' s in all other subjects. Another Honors ADHD student was failing Chemistry and Geometry when he started tutoring with me and ended up with A's in both classes. Recently an ADHD Algebra student who was failing started with me mid semester, passed the EOC, and got a C in the class.

Test Preparation

ASVAB,

ASVAB

I have had several ASVAB students who have improved their scores on the test. Usually students need the most help in math, which is good, because that is the area in which I am best equipped to help. One student failed the test twice before coming to me, and I helped him study and pass it the third time. He is in the Reserves. Another student wanted a high math score to obtain a better starting position. He tutored with me for two months and acheived his target score, telling me I was "the best teacher he had ever had." He is now in active duty and soon will be pursuing a college degree.

Excellent Chemistry tutor!

Kay did an exceptional job tutoring my son in Honors Chemistry. He’s been struggling in the course, unable to master the materials. After one session, with Kay his grade average went from a C to a B. He performed sufficiently better on his recent quiz & test and more importantly he’s understandings the material. Kay was accommodating with last-minute changes in schedule. We will most definitely use her tutoring services on a regular basis. Kay was recommended by a friend / a pass client and I’m extremely please we went with the recommendation.

Very Helpful and Knowledgeable Tutor

Kay has helped me begin to learn all about General Chemistry 2. I want to succeed throughout my second semester of college so I thought seeing the material early would be beneficial. Kay has introduced various topics to me that I have now been able to see before I begin the course. She is helpful, and engaging, and answered the numerous questions I had! I highly recommend if you are struggling with any chemistry course because she knows chemistry well!

Knowledgeable, patient and makes learning east

When I reached out to Kay less than 2 months ago, my son was failing chemistry. She worked with him once every 1-2 weeks and actually got him to understand and feel comfortable with chemistry. He ended the semester moving his grade up 2 levels and this is due to Kay's exceptional tutoring. I highly recommend Kay for any student struggling with chemistry.
