Hi parents and students! I am a student of life who is willing to share/teach all that I have learned and can do. I started teaching in summer camps at age 14. In college, my professors thought I was a natural teacher and they invited me to be a teacher's assistant. After college, I moved myself across the country to Miami, Florida for my first job as a textile designer. I knew no one in south Florida except my English professor's college roommate. She and her husband had been long time residents of the area and they were very helpful in teaching me things about south Florida. After working as a designer for two years, I decided that I wanted to teach in the public school system. I was interested in elementary school, but the job that I took was teaching high school students, 9th through 12th grade. I stayed at this high school for eight years and then transferred to the elementary level where I worked for two years. My husband was transferred out of south Florida and when we relocated to the panhandle of Florida, I began teaching at Pensacola College through the department of Community Education where I worked with both children from ages 5 to 15 and I started teaching adult art classes, also. I now teach through the Community Education department at Santa Fe College.

As a teacher for over 25 years, my students have ranged in age from 4 to 84! I have enjoyed every age group. I am a serious teacher with goals and expectations for my students, but I like to bring humor and fun to learning so students are excited about what they are doing and all the opportunities that are possible with education. While the fine arts have been by main area of expertise, I have helped students with vocabulary, writing, speaking and applying to colleges. I consider myself a versatile teacher who is creative with finding the answers to teach what is necessary for the student. One day in my high school art class, my students were not being realistic about how they could/would live on a minimum wage job, so we did a budget on the cha

As a high School teacher for nearly a decade, I would work with all my students to make sure that they had a plan for life after high school. Whether it was going on for more study at a college, or within a technical program or out into the job force. I explained to my students that at 18 years of age it is difficult to determine what one wishes to do with the rest of one's life. I told my students that the average person has five career changes in a career lifetime. I encouraged my students to take aptitude test and to "shadow" someone in a field that they thought they might wish to go into. I also worked with my students to develop a list of skills and interests that they felt they were in possession of . We would review these list together and specific examples were sighted to support that the student was honestly evaluating themselves. I am a very intuitive person and I could often point out to a student strengths that I saw them having which they did not recognize in themselves. We would discuss career possibilities based on all of their skills, talents and abilities. My students constantly compared me to Oprah, as I am determined to help all of them achieve their goals. Today, I keep in touch with many of my high school students who have gone on to be happy and productive people in their fields. One student which I assisted in getting a full scholarship to the Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale, as an Industrial Designer, obtained a job before he graduated. Another one of my students wished to be a writer. I encouraged him to keep a journal and I permitted him to save his art grade one semester, by writing a story. He did write an incredible story which I was very impressed by, thus saving his grade in Ceramics class. In 2007, he published his first book to wonderful reviews as a first time author. I could go on and on with numerous examples. If you would like me to, please contact me. Bottom line, I am a dedicated teacher who wants everyone to do well and be their best and most people need hel

Public Speaking

Well as a teacher since the age of 24 (I turn 50 this February), I have spoken before students for 26 years. It comes quite naturally to me and I am never paralyzed with fear, as most people are with public speaking. I work with my students who are preparing to speak in front of an audience for the first time, by demonstrating some relaxation techniques with breathing. This is were most of the fear of public speaker problems are rooted. We also review all the things which a good public speaker is: 1) Prepared. We will go over their speech which is written on note cards, until they know it my heart 2) Nicely presented in their physical appearance. 3) Voice tone, volume adjusted to be heard well and to emphasize points. 4) Developing Confidence to relate to one's audience with an appropriate joke or brief story. 5) Practice, practice, practice. 6) Letting the student know that they are not alone. That 99% of people are terrified of public speaking and everyone in the audience really wants them to do well and engaging.

I have been a 4.0 student since the 7th grade. I am turning 50 in two weeks. As a teacher in the state of Florida, I must maintain my teaching certificate by taking two credit classes every five years. Study skills involve teaching a student how to study by observing their current study habits. Most study skill habits are problematic because students do not know how time consuming studying is and they are clueless as how one studies and memorizes work. By talking with the student to determine what has and has not been working for them, I design an individual plan for his/her studying based on how they process information. Are they visual or auditory learners? A technique such as "association" memorization often helps the student with creating memory for retaining information.

Patient and Encouraging

Terri has been working with my elementary aged kids on reading and writing. She established an immediate rapport with them, and they look forward to tutoring sessions with her and leave feeling accomplished and happy. After just a few sessions there has been improvement. I had the opportunity to see a student recognize Terri at our tutoring location and observe that student's gratitude, happiness, pride and in updating Terri on progress made. Terri sends overview and feedback the evening of the session, is prompt, open and clear in communicating and I look forward to continuing to have my children work with her on their reading and writing.

Tutor responded:

Shamerian, Thank you for taking time to write such a thorough evaluation of my lessons with your children! I am doing my best, they are doing their best, you are doing your best and that is what it is all about!!!! Play it forward! We each have the power everyday to change the world in a positive way by each of us doing what we are supposed to be doing and doing it to our best ability!

Great tutor!

Very good teacher. Knowledgeable, patient, tried innovative approaches to maintain the session's interest and enthusiasm. Would recommend her highly to other students.

Excellent tutor

Terri is a good and a serious tutor. She takes her time and tries to find the best for you. She is creative, enthusiastic and funny. During my stay at Gainesville, Terri was happy to help me, trying to find people to help me to improve my English, all days. If you need a tutor, I think that Terri will be the best for you.

Steeve, 13 lessons with Terri
Tutor responded:

Thank you Steeve. I have learned a great deal from you in your area of neuroscience! You are very hardworking and manage to budget your time well with all of your demands. I think you have mastered the "th" and "h" sounds, which are very challenging as they are not sounds that you have in your native language. Keep up the good work!

Great tutor.

Terri is a great tutor! She is patient and really cares about my learning. I am improving my English and I am very glad to have meet her.
