My Bachelor's degree is in English Language and Literature for secondary education, my Master's degree is in literature, and my Education Specialist degree and Ph.D. are both in educational leadership. I hold an active teaching certificate in both English and psychology for grades 6-12, my administrative certificate spans grades K-12, and I also hold a central office administration certification. Although I am new to Wyzant, I have tutored high school and college students for many years in English, specifically writing, reading, and grammar; test preparation for the ACT and (P)SAT; and editing/revising essays. I am passionate about education, and I love working directly with students to help them develop the skills they need to succeed both in school and in life. I relate well to students of all ages, and I focus on making tutoring sessions engaging and fun, while helping students better understand and apply relevant concepts according to their needs and goals. I particularly enjoy seeing students become more capable and confident as their performance improves, which is why teaching and tutoring are so rewarding.

I have taught a variety of English classes at the high school level, including AP Language and Composition, AP literature and Composition, American Literature, and World Literature, and I also ran a writing lab for students. I served as one of the national readers for the AP Language and Composition exam for the College Board, and I have done considerable work with teachers to help them apply best practices in instruction. Throughout my career, I have worked with students of all ability types, including gifted students and students with special needs. Although I am driven purely by student success rather than personal distinction, I have been honored and humbled by a number of awards over the years. I was Teacher of the Year at North Farmin

Proofreading

I have 10 years of tutoring experience working with high school and college students (undergraduate through Ph.D.) on proofreading their writing, offering revision and editing support. I did not hire an outside editor for my own 274-page dissertation, which is a rare occurrence, as I was able to fully proofread my own work. Furthermore, I taught high school English at a High School for eight years, which gave me a tremendous amount of experience proofreading students' writing. I served as a National Advanced Placement Reader for The College Board for the AP English Language and Composition Exam, which means I scored essays for the annual AP exam. My Bachelor's Degree (BS) is in English Language and Literature, and my Master's Degree (MA) is in English Literature. My Secondary English Teacher Certification (Grades 6-12) remains active.

Basketball

I have been a lifelong basketball player, and I continue to compete in the Come Play Detroit Men's Draft Basketball League in which I was the 2nd leading scorer last season. In terms of coaching, I began as the men's varsity basketball assistant coach at a High School for one year. Then, I coached 4th-6th grade girls in a Community Education recreational league for two years, followed by coaching a 6th-8th grade girls' travel basketball team for the past three years. I'm proud of the growth my players have shown, their team spirit, and their many accomplishments (multiple undefeated seasons and championships). I am interested in helping young players further develop their dribbling, passing, shooting, and rebounding skills while also helping them improve their athleticism, footwork, defense, and overall basketball knowledge, all of which leads to greater confidence and enjoyment of the game.

Best English tutor ever!

Phillip has been tutoring both my high school sons for the last year and a half. They are each different writers so I can write from the perspective of two different types of tutoring that Phillip provides. For my older son, he is able to help in fine tuning and teaching the more nuanced touches of a finished paper. For my younger son, he helped greatly with organization and structuring his papers. After just a few lessons, my younger son has improved 10 fold. He is more confident and earning As in English! Phillip is always incredibly responsive and accommodating with online appointment times. He always gives a thoughtful and detailed update after each lesson. Probably the best compliment though is that both my boys think he is the best tutor they have ever had. According to them, he is the GOAT!

Deborah, 34 lessons with Phillip
Tutor responded:

Wow! Thank you for sharing such wonderful feedback as I've really enjoyed working with both boys these past couple years. You are correct that they have different personalities and writing styles, but they are both terrific students and impressive human beings. I look forward to continuing to help them further strengthen their writing skills as they push towards even higher degrees of sophistication.

Patient and uplifting

He is trustworthy and has an outstanding ability to connect with young people. He put my daughter at ease and within a few minutes she opened up to share her work product so that they could then meticulously identify areas where she could improve. He left her feeling motivated to work hard and she was happier than I have seen her in several weeks. She worked toward the assignment after this lesson concluded with a renewed positive attitude. Highly recommend.

11th hour savior!

Select jumped into an AP literature, essay a few days before it was due and supported my daughter with time together her evidence to connect to her thesis statement. He was incredibly hands-on and supportive of her work. I’m definitely looking forward to using phillip again!

Great SAT tutor

My 9th-grader began working with Phillip on SAT preparation three months ago and enjoyed her experience. Phillip explains concepts clearly, offers plenty of practice examples and supplementary materials (that he authored!) to reinforce knowledge. Not only does Phillip prepare my daughter for the test, he also helps her build solid foundation, which tremendously boosts her confidence! Look forward to working with Phillip in the future.

I really appreciate your thoughtful feedback, Elena! Your daughter has been a joy to work with, and every week, I look forward to our meetings as she is such an eager learner who is fully engaged and dedicated to continuous improvement! I also can't wait for her next PSAT, so she can show off everything she has learned!

Amazing AP English tutor!

Phillip is a patient, creative, and very logical person. He is always prepared and very knowledgeable. I am a STEM person and English was never my favorite subject. To top it all, my internship made me miss one day of school during which I had the English class. With Phillip I caught up on my classmates and I analyzed the texts in a completely different way than I was doing it in class. His way made sense and it helped me remember the books I read. With his help I became so much better at analysis and essay writing and start having A+ s. It was not grade inflation. I really became a stronger student and to my parents’ amazement I scored a 5 on the AP language. I continued preparing with Phillip for my AP Literature test. I scored great on the pre-tests and felt confident after taking the AP Lit test. Thank you so much!

Thank you so much for this wonderful testimonial! For these past two years, I have looked forward to our weekly meetings every Friday evening as we worked through the content and test preparation for both AP Language and AP Literature! You are an intelligent, insightful, witty, and invested student with a bright future ahead. Even though you may be mostly drawn to STEM fields, don't discount your knack for literature and writing as you have developed a strong skill set in both areas. All the best to you in college and beyond!
