My passion for private tutoring comes from the joy of seeing students achieve personal goals, as well as showing that Mathematics can be fun. As a current Mathematics instructor I understand the challenges students face while mastering mathematical concepts. I seek to present mathematical ideas in a meaningful and simplistic way to engage and empower the learner.

I specialize in tutoring all topics in Mathematics, specifically, Calculus I,II, and III, Linear Algebra, Precalculus, and Statistics. Originally a Mathematics major, I hold a B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Maryland, College Park as well as a Masters with over 60 credits in advanced Mathematics. I am happy to tutor students of Analysis, Topology, Modern Algebra as well as Numerical Analysis.

My goal for each tutoring session is to provide relevant mathematical examples, useful strategies for problem solving, as well as guide the student through the steps necessary to solve the problem. Upon request, I can provide routine written assessments to identify strengths and indicate areas where further practice may prove beneficial.

I look forward to hearing from you and assisting in helping you realize your academic goals!

Calculus I (AB, BC, College Level): I am well versed in providing instruction in the Calculus sequence. I tutor all levels of calculus and am successful in preparing students for the AB and BC Calculus Exam as well as managing the transition from high school to College level Calculus. I can assist the calculus student in review of Precalculus, Trigonometry and Algebra as well as the course specific skills such as estimating the derivative, using the limit definition of the derivative, finding derivatives with the product, quotient, and chain rule, finding derivatives using implicit differentiation, graphing parametric equations, finding the average rate of change of a continuous function over a closed interval, finding the average value of a function on a closed interval, applying Newton's Method, applying and understanding the Mean Value Theorem, The Intermediate Value Theorem, The Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, solving related rates problems, solving optimization problems, explaining the relationship between Riemann sums, areas and definite integrals, approximating the area under the curve, and evaluating definite and indefinite integrals.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

Precalculus is an essential course in Mathematics. With my assistance the student should master their facility with Algebra as well as Trigonometry in preparation for Calculus. I have taught this course multiple times. During tutoring sessions I will work with the student to describe and analyze properties of functions algebraically and graphically using the TI-83(4) calculator, interpret transformations of functions, develop models from verbal descriptions or data, apply mathematical models to solve a problem and interpret the solution, simplify expressions, verify identities and solve equations, solve and interpret absolute value, rational and polynomial inequalities algebraically and graphically, combine functions by composition and understand the properties of the newly formed functions, determine the inverse of a function when appropriate, evaluate zeroes, symmetries, relative extrema, and intervals of inequality of functions and parametric equations, as well as sketch by hand, and label significant features on graphs of course functions. I find multiple approaches to make the material understandable and build mathematical confidence in the student.

Linear Algebra,

Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra is an important bridge course to many exciting fields of Mathematics. Some of the basic concepts include vector spaces, linear equations and matrices, determinants, linear transformations, similar matrices, eigenvalues , and quadratic forms. In the past I have assisted students with matrix algebra, finding and interpreting eigenvectors, orthogonality and least squares modeling of data. I can work with the student on understanding the impact of the theory in applied fields such as Numerical Analysis using MATLAB and providing real world examples that will give context to the processes learned in the course. Also, upon request I can go through the proofs of all relevant theorems to develop a sense of mathematical maturity in the student. I have taught this course at the college level multiple times with much success. I have studied this area extensively in courses such as Linear Analysis, Applications to Linear Algebra, and Linear Mathematical Modeling. I am familiar with several popular texts used in this course including Lay and Axler.

Mary is a Math Wiz with patience and talent!

Mary was just the tutor Aaron needed to build his confidence and skills. She was able to meet him where he needed help and take it from there. Her in depth knowledge of math was invaluable and helped him address a variety of questions in Calculus AB. Parents can even get her help for college courses.
