I am a licensed teacher in math and social students, and predominately teach math, anywhere from elementary school to college level math. I am also licensed in Business Technology.

I currently teach business and Microsoft Office certifications at a drop out recovery school for students who weren't able to successfully complete school the traditional way. Working with these students has opened up my eyes that for some, the same way isn't always the best way.

I also teach math in the evenings for a local college and have seen the first hand disconnect that sometimes is there from graduating school and going on to college, or even for those who have been away from school for awhile and have forgotten how to do math.

I believe everyone can learn, despite what struggles may have. I am patient and will help the student. I grew up with several disabilities, and I understand what it feels like to struggle, to be frustrated and to want to give up. I have ADHD, Dyslexia and Apraxia. With a lot of hard work, I learned how to learn my way, and I use my experiences to help others.

I currently teach Microsoft Office Specialist Certifications to high school students. I have the MOS in Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and Excel. I've been using these programs for years when I was working in non-profit and then later in education. What you learn in Microsoft can be used to convert documents to Google and knowing what you are doing will make a world of difference and help you to stand out from everyone else.

ADHD

I have my Master's in Education and I work for a non-profit organization that works mainly with people with disabilities, at-risk, disadvantage and low income. With this background I have worked as a tutor for multiple youth that have various disabilities. I have also tutored a young man for a few years who had severe dyslexia and ADHD. Many times it was trial and error just to find out what worked for him. I understand that people with ADD/ADHD need to take frequent breaks for their own sake and to keep from overloading them with information. I know some people need background noise to study and concentrate while there are others who need the entire house to be quiet. I use my own personal experiences of having ADD to relate to my students. When they express frustration for not being able to concentrate, I am able to understand exactly how they feel. If one way doesn't work for a student then I change tactics, and try something else. Everyone learns differently.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD),

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I have an education background and around ten years experience working with kids and adults with disabilities. When I worked as a respite provider the majority people that I worked with had Autism. The one thing I learned is that every autistic person out there is different. One case, is not like the next and so to understand and help them, you have to understand and know them. You have to know their quirks, what they love to do, what they are most knowledgeable in and what areas will set them off. Once you know that you can progress to the next stage and help them to learn and to make connections, but if you don't have a connection with the child, and stick to a very structured schedule, you may not get anywhere with the child and that is the first and most important thing when you work them. But each autistic child has the capabilities to learn and to grasp a new concept, they just need someone who understands that and them in order to help them. And I do. I haven't done any one-on-one tutoring with somesome with autism before, but I have been a care provider, and I have worked in early childhood centers with multiple autistic children. It is that experience that I am basing my experience off of.
Dyslexia,

Dyslexia

I hold both a Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Education. While my background is in regular education, I do have over ten years work experience with people with disabilities. Dyselxia is often harder to teach because each dyslexic child is different. They could only mix up their numbers, or their words, or certain letters or maybe they just mix up everything. I tutored my brother-in-law for several years when he was in school and he was severely dyslexic. I have also helped my husband who is also severely dyslexic. Both have improved but the key is to never give up and to keep reinforcing it. I too, have dyslexia but have managed for the most part to keep it contained. There are times when I am stressed and people can tell but for the most, people don't know that I have dyslexia and alot of it is because of the tips and tricks I learned as a child, that I continue to use today to help me. Some of it is retraining your brain and some of it is just being stubborn and not giving up.
Special Needs

Special Needs

I have my Master's in Education and over 10 years of work experience working with people with special needs, anywhere from ADHD to people with Downs syndrome and autism. For about six years I was a respite/care provider for kids and adults with disabilities and that is where most of my experience comes from. I have a degree in regular education but I have always had an interest in special needs kids because I have a disability, I have always wanted to help those who would fall between the cracks or just not get the help they should have gotten. I am very patient and am fine with explaining something over and over and using non-traditional teaching methods in order to help out a student. I was raised that we are all the same. Just because some one might be classified as having a learning disability is okay because all that means is that they learn differently and I strongly believe that. Kids with disabilities, can be taught, it just may not be the same way that everyone else learns.

Just what we needed!

This was our first session with Lindsay. She was SPOT ON! She quickly picked up on my granddaughters challenges and offered easy to implement techniques to assist with her homework and learning. My granddaughter is looking forward to her next session- and so am I. She is SO patient and gentle, but direct with redirection. I look forward to posting more reviews as we continue!
