Bio

While earning my PhD in Literature (Shakespeare), I also worked as a Shakespearean dramaturg (a researcher, writer, and educator) for productions of Shakespeare’s plays, both for a theatre troupe that was a part of my university and for a professional theatre company. Attending rehearsals allowed me to become steeped in Shakespeare’s language in a special way. I would liken it to attending rehearsals for a musical performance. Of course, it is possible to revel in Shakespeare’s artistry solely by reading his texts. I love to encourage others to develop their own deep engagement with Shakespeare’s language, through attentive reading of his texts.

In addition to a PhD in Literature (Shakespeare), I also hold a MFA in Fiction and a MA in Classics (Latin and Ancient Greek languages and literatures). Because I am a creative writer, I bring not just a scholarly sensibility to my appreciation of Shakespeare, but also an artistic one. My background in Latin and Ancient Greek allows me to appreciate Shakespeare’s habit of drawing upon Classical literature in the crafting of his plays.

As a Shakespearean dramaturg, I have been an educator to university-level—including MFA-level—students as well as to professional directors and actors. I also have served as an educator to audiences as well as to a Shakespeare club and to the general public. As a PhD candidate, I was a teaching assistant for university-level literature courses. I led discussion sections, created lesson plans, held office hours at which I coached students on their writing, created paper prompts, and graded students’ writing. While earning my MA in Classics, I taught my own university-level classes in beginning Latin and in Greek and Latin word roots. Similarly, while earning my MFA in Fiction, I taught my own university-level classes in English composition and in short story writing. I especially enjoy working with individuals who want to gain, or to reinforce, a sense of rich engagement with a text.
