About Ulrich

Bio

For more than two decades, I have been passionate about instilling in students a true interest in life-long learning, in learning languages, and in exploring other cultures. Beyond that, I have experienced special satisfaction in developing my students’ social skills, their creativity and analytical thinking, along with a focus on idealism and social justice.

Beyond that, I have experienced special satisfaction in developing my students’ social skills, their creativity and analytical thinking, along with a focus on idealism and social justice.

During the course of my career, I have had the opportunity to teach at various schools in Germany, Texas, Pennsylvania, and California. Most of the years I have taught in both public and private schools in the United States as a German language instructor or generalist. Lately, I have helped numerous learners succeed with their personal goals in high school, college, and university level German classes. This included preparation for various exams for those interested in studying or living in Germany such as the B1 or C1.

In Texas, I taught English, Social Studies, Science, Math, Computer Literacy, and German. I was chosen to teach High School German at one of the nation's best public high schools in Pittsburgh, PA and, upon moving to California, became a teacher for Math, German, and Humanities at a private international school in Menlo Park, CA. Now residing in Petaluma, CA , I mainly teach German one-on-one, online, and in small group settings in Sonoma and Marin counties. Besides offering my own online learning environment, students from 25+ nations have valued the interdisciplinary connections I strive for, my multilingual communication skills, my structured and well-planned approach as well as my ability to react to changing requirements in flexible, creative, and efficient ways. I have been a teacher since 1987. Besides English and world languages, Geography and Social Studies have always been my favorite subjects to teach. I taught as a generalist at public elementary schools in Texas for six years and more recently at a private school in California. My students came to love Geography, not only because I have lived in various countries and traveled a lot myself. It can be really fun!

Excellent German Tutor--helped me prepare for move to Germany!

I have been meeting with Ulrich once a week for a few months in preparation for moving to Germany. In a relatively short period of time, he has helped me improve my German conversational skills a great deal and has supplied me with much of the logistical knowledge I needed to transition smoothly into German life. Although our lessons focus heavily on conversation, Uli is always prepared with helpful grammar materials for times when grammatical concepts give me trouble. He is also super knowledgeable when it comes to German culture and history. Our conversations have been fun for me because I get to learn about German artists, German history, the foods in specific German regions, and lately he was even willing to spend an entire lesson answering a thousand questions about how the German parliament works. If you are looking for a German tutor who is fun to talk to, extremely knowledgeable (both about the German language and any other miscellaneous German topics you might think of), and will push your speaking abilities to the next level, I highly recommend Uli!

I've had five lessons with Ulrich so far. He's an excellent teacher who is helping me brush up on my High School German skills from 30 or so years ago. He has done a good job of assessing my goals and has developed a useful curriculum for me to meet them.
