Dear Potential Student,

My name is Ms. Terry P. and I have a very strong interest in helping students (such as yourself) expand their knowledge base, in order to perform their best both in classroom and in life. I have always had a passion for helping others succeed beginning as a 10 year old 5th grader, when I was chosen to help students in the lower grades with math and reading assignments.

As I matriculated to high school the same need existed. Although I was a 4-year varsity letter-man basketball player, I would primarily help freshman and sophomores with developing good study habits while assisting them with their Math, Science and Language Arts assignments. As a freshman at Louisiana State University (LSU), I helped the student-athletes improve their persuasive writing skills by proof-reading their work and offering restructuring of their papers. Later, as a career Supervisor in the Blood Bank at DeWitt Army hospital at Fort Belvoir, VA, I became the key instructor in laboratory studies for the military Medical Lab Technicians. This included areas of study such as Chemistry analysis, Hematology/Coagulation, Urinalysis and Microbiology. Oftentimes, they would also need help with math associated with the Medical Laboratory Technician exam for certification.

My style of teaching is very much a free-style, where I relate the material to the students' interest. For example, if they are a basketball enthusiast, I will relate the understanding of percentage to shooting free throws. If you are into gymnastics, the dynamics of flips and aerial somersaults might be related to both geometry and physics. If you like to read, then that same passion is developed as it applies to a particular class, where the reading may be uninteresting. I like to interject humor into my teaching style, to make learning fun and easier to understand. I strongly believe in my ability to help you overcome your learning challenge(s) and look forward to working with you.

Elementary (K-6th)

I served in the capacity of mentor as a 7th grader, to children in the 1st and 3rd grades to help them with reading and vocabulary. I have worked with my own 3 children in the same capacity since they were about the same ages as the students I've mentored. I currently teach biblical studies to kids ages 10-13 yrs. old, relating the principles to their everyday challenges in school. Oftentimes, we use the opportunity to address specific challenges in math they may be having in school. Reading skills are assessed by having the students read certain verses of scripture, usually using an unedited version. I am a member of the drama ministry and on occasion work with the children to learn their lines. This helps them learn to focus on improving their memory, especially when it comes to preparation for tests in school.
Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

I have always been very passionate about math, ever since elementary school. I attained A's in most classes and exempted from college level math due to high ACT and SAT scores, instantly earning 5 credit hours. I truly have a strong fondness for math and enjoy teaching its concepts to others.
Homeschool,

Homeschool

I have worked with younger aged children since my own Elementary and Middle School years, over 40 years ago. I currently homeschool a student with physical challenges, hired from Wyzant initially for math help. After being tasked to provide a complete curriculum to include Science, Literature, English, Math and Art, the experience landed me working with other parents choosing to homeschool their children, PRIOR to in-person schooling shutdown. Furthermore, at least one of those previously homeschooled students successfully passed entrance into Southern Maryland College in Waldorf.

Reading

Consistently assisted fellow classmates with reading and writing skills throughout middle school years. I tutored college freshman athletes while a student at Louisiana State Univ (LSU). Due to high reading/writing ACT scores, I nearly exempted from having to take college entry-level writing course. I have edited the work of engineers and military officers alike. My own three (3) children have excelled through elementary years into college with their writing skills, and my 3rd grader has been recognized for awarded the Principal's Award for academic excellence in each marking period since starting Elementary School.

I had the privilege of recently assisting a young lady with her application to the University of Georgia Law School, whom I have known since she was a middle school student. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from UNC - Greensboro and is now a commissioned officer with the US Air Force in the Judge Advocate Gen. (JAG) Office while stationed in Germany. She apparently trusted enough in my ability to assist her and I am glad I was able to help in a small way. Considering her academic accomplishments, she didn't really need me; however, something I've imparted in her life suggested otherwise.
