Hi! I have tutored many children and enjoy doing so. I help them improve not only their grades, but more importantly their understanding of the work. Kids learn best when the learning is fun, and I try to make it that way.

Being able to relate to children and communicate with them on their own level is crucial, and something I am very fortunate in being able to do. My goal goes far beyond assisting children to finish homework and prepare for the next test. I encourage children to think for themselves by asking questions, and also want them to feel that the material has some meaning in their lives.

As a former stay-at-home Dad, I have had lots of practice.

Is your child struggling with math? The boring questions in textbooks may be part of the problem.

A Simple Example:

If there are 100 marbles and Johnnie takes 25, how many marbles are left?

Snooze.

But turn that question into something fun, vibrant (and maybe ridiculous) and it may become very interesting:

If there are 100 giant, red, juicy watermelons and we catapult 25 of them at my new car, how many watermelons are left?

Or take a division problem that may seem abstract to a young child when read from the book:

If Jane has 9 cookies and has four friends over for lunch, how can the cookies be divided evenly? How many cookies would each child receive, and how many would be left over?

I may ask the student to invite her stuffed animals to join us. We’ll figure out together what we can use for ‘cookies’ (nothing messy) and the child will distribute them to her stuffed animals. Division becomes more than a mental exercise as she takes physical action to complete the math problem.
