I've been tutoring students online since 2020 and have worked with students ranging in age from 3 to 26 on everything from letter identification to critical thinking to test preparation and writing essays.
I believe:
* Students learn better when they are reminded they are smart and capable; every student is gifted in some way.
*Not all students learn the same way, and not all teachers teach the same way. If you find the right fit, it's magic! Knowing a student's learning style helps me teach more effectively and in a way that makes sense to them.
*Mistakes are the best teacher, so correcting errors should be cause for celebration not embarrassment! If you never make mistakes, you are not growing as a learner. Embrace a growth mindset!
*Reading is a life skill. If you can read and comprehend well, the world is open to you. If you struggle with reading, that impacts your ability to learn all subjects- even math.
*Grammar and conventions are kind of boring...but you need to learn them to become a better writer and communicator.
*Expressing yourself in writing is not easy. I teach:
o how to organize your writing
o how to write compelling and varied sentences
o how to communicate your ideas clearly and effectively.
I offer a FREE introductory meeting so we can discuss areas of concern and find out if we may be a good fit. Finding a tutor who "gets" your child and who can appreciate their unique gifts is crucial. Don't go with the first tutor you speak to; find a tutor who understands your child and their academic needs and who "clicks" with your child. That connection can be THE motivating force for students.
Please reach out if your child needs academic support; I can't wait to help them tap into their intelligence!

Grammar,

Grammar

I taught English language arts to middle grade students for 20 years, and I became quite an expert on English grammar in that time! Concepts of grammar can be boring and/or confusing, but I try to make it fun. :-)

While I spent 20 years teaching middle school language arts, I passed the state test in Georgia (GACE) for teaching all elementary subjects at the Professional Level in 2019. I also worked as a paraprofessional in a kindergarten classroom for the 2018-2019 school year, and rediscovered my love for working with younger students!

Phonics,

Phonics

I taught language arts for 20 years, but I worked in a kindergarten classroom a couple of years ago and learned so much from the lead teacher in that class! That experience inspired me to prepare for and take both assessments that are required of teachers in Georgia before they can teach in the elementary grades - I passed both tests last summer at the Professional Level. I shifted to online tutoring this fall, and since then most of my students are between kindergarten and fourth grade, and I work with many of them on decoding skills, phonics, and sight word mastery.
Reading,

Reading

I taught language arts for 20 years and worked with students on reading fluency and comprehension among other things. As a tutor, I have worked with students ranging in age from 3 to 21 years of age, with students at both ends of that spectrum learning to read or read more fluently. I support students in learning to decode words, increase fluency, master sight words, and deepen comprehension.
Spelling,

Spelling

I taught language arts for 20 years and served as middle school spelling bee coordinator and coach for over ten years. I'm experienced in working with students on breaking words down based on language of origin as well as common and uncommon spelling patterns in English.

Study Skills

As a veteran classroom educator, I’ve worked with thousands of kids as an instructor, but also as a mentor and facilitator when it comes to study skills, including time management, organizational strategies, setting priorities, and breaking assignments down into manageable “chunks.” Often the biggest piece of the puzzle is getting and staying organized, and once that structure is in place and maintained, the rest starts to fall into place.

I taught language arts for 20 years in the classroom, but I have always loved the opportunity to work with students one on one. I graduated cum laude from the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California with a BA in English and Literature, and I am certified to teach English in grades 6-12.

Patient, intentional and knowledgeable

Fran has been doing CoGat test prep for my 3rd and 4th grader as well as ELA tutoring. From the get go my kids warmed up to her. Before starting the sessions she took time to listen to my detailed description of my kids personalities and learning styles as well what I was looking for in terms of content. She was attentive and took detailed notes. She has a panache for getting kids to open up and feel comfortable which is key in Order for any real constructive learning to take place. I have gone on to recommend her to others and look forward to continuing with Fran for a long time to come.

Wonderful and Knowledgeable Tutor

Fran has been tutoring my daughter on reading comprehension since November 2021 and I've seen a great improvement in her reading skills. She got 100% on her last two read theory tests in school and I'm very happy with her progress. Fran is very pleasant, flexible, patient and professional. She sends detailed feedback after each lesson which is very helpful. My daughter enjoys her lessons very much and she finds them fun and interesting. I'd highly recommend Fran for reading tutoring needs.

Knowledgable, patient partner/tutor

Fran is an amazing partner. After we agreed she was the right fit for my son, she worked directly with his English teacher to focus on concepts and assignments with which he needed help. Fran is patient, personable and always helps my son get through his work. She follows up with detailed notes for me and communicates well in advance about upcoming breaks and scheduling issues. I highly recommend Fran.
