I am a full time public school math teacher, but my "first love" is tutoring. I find one-on-one instruction to be the ideal situation for genuine learning to happen. When I'm tutoring, I can really get to the heart of where the real struggles are, and I can be your cheerleader, advocate, and general encourager. We also usually have a lot of fun along the way, with (often dry) wit and good humor offered at no extra charge.

I specialize primarily in math. My specialties are on the upper end of high school math, as well as College Algebra and early calculus. I have a real knack for explaining math concepts in ways that are easy to understand and breaking complicated skills into manageable steps. I also consider no small part of my job to be a confidence builder because that's often the biggest problem. Usually students understand much more than they realize, so there are many things to feel good about. For example, if you're looking at this profile, that is evidence that you care about your learning enough to consider tutoring. That is an early and necessary step in your way to success!

Wherever I teach, I eventually develop a reputation for being extremely knowledgeable in my subject, and other teachers often come to me when they have questions. I recently retook my Praxis Math Content and made nearly a perfect score (197 out of 200). I have also passed actuarial exams P (probability) and FM (financial math).

In the year 2020, I was rated a top 10% tutor, with 75 different students and a top subject of Actuarial Science (Exams P and FM only).

I also have about 18 college hours of English and a graduate degree in philosophy. I have experience in English tutoring and some science. I am proficient in grammar, comprehension, and other English-related subtopics.

Statistics,

Statistics

I have tutored students in statistics at the college level and helped students understand the very counterintuitive concepts that are difficult to grasp just from a textbook. I have had great success in helping students who were very shaky on the concepts to deepen their understanding and get excellent grades in the class. I have also passed actuarial exam P (probability), the which covers many of the same topics in depth without the benefit of graphing calculators or software. In order to pass it, I had to teach myself, to do the hard work of pulling these concepts from a textbook with very little guidance.

Thank you for your kind review. I really enjoy working with you and seeing you learn and understand more and more.

Very helpful

John was very helpful with my specific questions regarding the FM exam. He also had the insight based on our conversation on topics that may also be troublesome to practice.

Knowledgeable and Patient Tutor

John has been tutoring me for the past three months now, and his tutoring honestly helps me more than the actual class I am taking for FM. Completely worth the investment.

Very patient and thorough tutor!

I found John on Wyzant as he was listed as a statistics tutor. As I have been struggling with statistics for quite some time, John explained everything I was confused about in an hours time! He taught me step by step how to solve problems and explained the reason for each answer. I highly recommend him especially if you are skeptical about online vs. in-person tutoring as I was at first. 10/10!

Passed Exam FM

John taught me all of the theoretical information and concepts behind Exam FM. He knows everything about this exam. If you have any questions on financial mathematics, you should definitely ask him. 100% recommend! Now, I am starting to take Exam P and he again understands all the content.

Clear and Helpful

John helped to explain a wide array of questions that I had for my Praxis exam. I enjoyed how he would also point out interesting, more in-depth concepts that questions could point to, as well as providing a larger framework that I could use to solve similar problems. With his help, I passed my exam! Thanks John!
