I achieved a Bachelor of Arts Magna Cum Laude in Psychology. After some years of work experience I went back to graduate school and obtained a Master's degree in Biology with a certificate in Human Nutrition.

Besides being a certified Tutor for English as a Second Language (ESL)with WyzAnt, I am also a certified tutor for ESL with some of the local Libraries. Furthermore, I have been certified by the Florida Literacy Coalition as an ESL/ESOL Tutor. Since the Eighties, I have been a certified USA Government translator from English to Spanish and vice-versa. Additionally, I have published articles in English and have been a Public Speaker for a USA Governmental agency on both languages. I have been in the USA now for over 30 years and I have excellent command of writing, reading and speaking of English. Having learnt English as a second language gives me the advantage of knowing the intricacies and difficulties inherent to this process, which someone that only speaks or always spoken English would not even begin to comprehend.

I have always enjoyed languages and have helped many students, both High School and College Level, to improve their grade average and pass their English and Spanish courses in order to graduate. Most of my students have achieved A's in their coursework.
I also have adult learners that are interested in languages mostly for their careers but also for traveling purposes. I have yet to find a learner that I have not been able to not only help but excel in their learning objectives.

I am also able to help students with many areas in Biology, Biochemistry, Anatomy and Physiology and Nutrition. I am able to help students that speak Spanish and may have problems in learning science in English.

I am currently a certified tutor with the Largo Library teaching English as a second language (ESL). Also have completed a certification with the Florida Literacy Coalition as an ESL Tutor. Have been a certified US Government translator from English to Spanish and vice-versa, for decades. Have published articles in English and have been a Public Speaker for a governmental agency. Having been in the USA now for over 30 years has given me excellent command over the writing, reading and speaking of English. Having learned English as a second language gives me the advantage of knowing the intricacies and difficulties inherent to this process, which someone that only speaks or always spoke English would not begin to even comprehend.

Spanish

I have now been teaching Spanish through Wyzant for over nine years and several more previously on my own. For many more years I was a Government translator from English to Spanish and Spanish to English, which gives me a unique perspective on both languages. Furthermore, I have the advantage of being a native speaker of Spanish but also excellent in my handling of English. I believe it is truly important for a Spanish tutor to be versed in English to better understand and teach a person that speaks English. You will find many Spanish tutors that do not have a good command of English and will miss a lot of what you are trying to communicate to them. Also, there are certain elements in the English language that do not exist in Spanish and knowing these differences in both languages can help with some of the pitfalls and obstacles English-speaking learners can face when speaking Spanish. A tutor who is not truly bi-lingual will not be able to discern the subtleties in differences and similarities in both language that can help you learn faster.

Elaine is a very patient tutor.

Elaine has been tutoring Spanish to my 17 yr old son who is taking Spanish through FL Virtual Online to gain a credit to graduate early. He began the course thinking that he did not need to actually "learn" Spanish, he made it about a third of the way through the class before realizing that the online teacher did expect him to actually "learn" how to speak Spanish. I went through WyzAnt and contacted Elaine V. and she has helped him to understand the proper ways to use the verbs and how to form the sentences correctly that the teacher was expecting him to learn from the website. Elaine has been very patient with him, giving him alot of encouragement and trying to show him that learning Spanish may one day aid him with his job search or in life in general. He is the reluctant 17 yr old student not really wanting to learn Spanish but knowing that the Spanish credit is required to graduate from High School one year early. She has made learning the language fun which he was not obtaining from watching and listening to the online tutors. I believe without Elaine helping him to understand the lessons and complete the assignments he would have been forced to drop the Spanish class at about one third of the way through. With Elaine's continued tutoring help I believe he will finish this online Spanish class and if he is required to take another credit of Spanish next year, she will aid with that and maybe one day he will need to speak Spanish because at 17 you never know where life will take you.

My experience with Elaine

Elaine is a very patient tutor. The way that she explains, for me, it is easier to understand the subject. She has worked a lot with me on the conjugation of verbs. That is my biggest opportunity to speak English.

Fantastico!!

Just finished my first lesson in Spanish. She is a very thorough teacher and very kind. Today we got through part of chapter 1 with masculine and feminine nouns. She is helping me with a few pronunciations and the breakdown of certain words. I look forward to working with her.

Another great lesson with Elaine!

As always, a lesson with Elaine is fun, personable, and educational. We spend some time in Spanish conversation and then we move into specific areas like vocab, grammar, etc - geared to my ability and learning level.

Understanding and detailed

Taught me the foundation of the language and how it is used. She was patient and helped me when I was not understanding the process. Elaine understands both English and Spanish which makes it very helpful to understand the accent.
