I bring an effective teaching approach that focuses on test mastery and content comprehension to my students. I have been an educator for more than ten years and my passion for working with students started as a mentor for young children. I focus on developing strong working relationships with each child to understand the individual student’s needs and learning styles.

I obtained my Bachelor of Science from New York University and have been working with students since graduating. I was awarded the Stern Scholarship for students with a history of academic excellence. I started tutoring in college because I found it so rewarding and I decided that it would be my focus after graduating. My favorite part of teaching is helping students reach their full potential with a disciplined and encouraging approach. Some of my favorite subjects to teach include Algebra and Geometry. In addition, I have years of experience and familiarity with test preparation for the ISEE, SSAT, SHSAT, Common Core, Regents, SAT and ACT exams. I am so thrilled to see my students' reaction when they reach their goals!

I specialize in math and really enjoy teaching it whether for academic support, enrichment or test preparation. My approach is to focus on a student's foundation through engaging exercises. I help my students strive for an intrinsic understanding of math. I have been tutoring math and standardized test preparation for years and have had tremendous success (with great students that worked hard)!

Please feel free to reach out to me for any questions. Before we begin sessions, I like to discuss your goals and my teaching approach to see if we would be a good fit.

Common Core,

Common Core

I am very familiar with the Common Core curriculum. This past academic year I had four fourth grade, one fifth grade and two seventh grade students with whom I met with weekly in order to prepare for the Common Core Exam. I teach my students testing strategies such as labeling reading comprehension questions before reading the passage, in addition to introducing them to new concepts that they may not learn in school. For example, basic Algebra concepts were on the fourth grade Common Core Exam this year which was not covered in school for any of my students.

ACT Reading,

ACT Reading

I have had much success increasing a student's ACT reading score considerably. I teach students proven reading comprehension strategies and techniques that can be used for the rest of their lives (not only for the ACT). I strive to help my students engage analytically and critically when reading a passage. It takes a high level of focus when reading a dense, complex passage but I guide my students through it. Ultimately, my students improve their reading comprehension through hard work and guidance.

Algebra 1

I helped two Algebra I students reach their goals and succeed in their exams. One student was failing Algebra and I worked with her each week, by the end of the year she had received a 97 on her math final! Algebra is one of my favorite subjects and it shows in my enthusiasm when teaching!
SAT Math,

SAT Math

I have over 500 hours of experience tutoring and helping students prepare for the math section of the SAT. From the start, I strive to build a solid working rapport with my students. This makes it easier to assess a student's comprehension and mastery of algebra, geometry, and statistics. There are fundamental concepts that a student must know very well before mastering the SAT math section. Then, familiarity with the types of problems and how to solve them is the next key step. I guide my students with an encouraging, positive approach through each step and milestone so they can achieve their goals.

Dyslexia

I am trained in the Orton-Gillingham methodology and am an educator with over ten years of experience, specializing in test preparation. I have completed 50 hours of pre-practicum instruction with an Orton-Gillingham Fellow. I am obtaining my Associate certification from the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators. As part of the practicum, I'm in the process of completing 100 hours of one-on-one tutoring and 10 hours of observation with feedback from course trainers. I decided to learn the Orton-Gillingham methodology to serve my students (whether or not they have dyslexia) better.

Excellent experience

We worked with Jennifer for 2.5 months, and are very happy with the outcome. Jen was quick to build a rapport with my son, and so he was comfortable working with her right away. She carried out an initial assessment and worked with us to outline areas of strength as well as where improvement was needed, and came up with a plan based on our timeline. We saw consistent improvement in basic understanding of concepts as well as confidence each week. We are very happy with our LL ISEE scores, and would highly recommend Jen as a wonderful tutor, without reservation.

Help for ISEE

Jennifer is easy-going an very amenable, while also being very motivating. She understands different learning styles and has been really helpful to my son, both in learning new math, testing strategies, and figuring out how to divide up his study/prep time.

Worth every penny!

Jen has been great. She has a clear plan for our son, and pushes him further each week. This week even discussing "reach" schools to inspire him to work harder. Now, without having to push, he's taking ownership for his roll in college placement.
