Bio

Because I have a love of children and teenagers, I have met with great success in teaching and tutoring. I was blessed with patience and kindness, which helps in explaining all phases of Math. I use the approach of mastering one step at a time because Math is a building block. If you do not pass one level as an example, it is not likely you will understand Algebra 1. I also believe in teaching the basic operations in Math, which is a prerequisite for higher Math.

My approach to teaching is a step-by-step method with the student taking notes and an example for each concept. This will serve as a reference if the student forgets. I teach ONE concept at a time with a sense of order. This is different than the approach to MCAS where subject matter is presented in a hurried fashion for the test.

My experience in tutoring Math expands over 25 years. I graduated college, cum laude, with a degree in Education. I taught in Brockton Public School for 3 years, K1, and substituted 2 years in Norwood, teaching all grades, all subjects. Because my husband bought a business, I then was CFO of his corporation for 21 years. During this time, my neighbors'
children and teens were failing Math and a business bloomed. I can provide references of the success that I had from Grades 6-12. As a result, EVERY person that I tutored raised their grades from D or F to B or A. This year was no exception. One student received an A minus and the other a B plus for the year in Grade 6.
All my Geometry and Algebra students, started with me in 8th grade and continued through high school. Each one was accepted to great colleges and are success stories. My record and experience makes me a tutor in demand.
Another success story is my own granddaughter, age 6. I started with the basics before she went to kindergarten this year. As a result, she was reading on a second grade level and her Math skills were above grade level. She certainly had the edge in her first formal year in school.

Elementary Math

I was an elementary school teacher for 3 years, a sub for 2 years and a private Math and Reading tutor for 25 years. I taught all phases of Math K-12 and I am certified in Algebra, Geometry, and reading. I have infinite patience and use different techniques for success. For example, for writing, I always have a thesaurus to expand their vocabulary. For Math, I give each student a notebook and we write and learn one concept at a time with an example for each in the notebook. This way, the student can always refer back. Also, free of charge, I let my students call me at home if they are stuck on something. I go the extra mile.

I use consonant as boys with a "catchy" identification such as B has beautiful button, D has delicious donuts, etc. I had much success with inner city children and this program to learn to decode and read. The girls are vowels-Miss A says "ATCHOO" with her finger under her nose; Miss I has poison ivy and is "itchy all the time-I have infinite patience also I taught K-1 for 3 years with inner city students, who were very behind in their skills. This took patience and knowledge to get them to decode and read using phonics. I am very animated so I kept their poor attention span going to reach the goal. Besides that, I taught them to print and do fundamental Math. I taught reading 4 hours a day, besides the regular curriculum. I also taught sight words using games such as Bingo, Jeopardy, and role playing. I had great success using the "Letter People" concept, along with traditional techniques. I also included blends, digraphs, long vowels, and every aspect of K-! reading fundamentals.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

For 25 years, I have been an Algebra and Geometry tutor. I teach all levels and if the student is not on grade level, I assess where he or she is. My background includes factoring, equations, quadratics, Pythagorean, linear functions, rational and irrational numbers, polynomials, and fractions. I start and continue at the student's pace. I hand out a notebook; the student takes notes, and has a written example. By doing this, the student can refer back to his notebook for each concept taught. Lesson plans are for each student. I live nearby, have patience, and had a very successful record.

To me, the explanation is more important than the homework. I start over if I see the blank look on the student's face.

For 25 years, I have tutored privately and before that, I was a K-1 teacher BEFORE there was special needs. In essence, I was the special needs teacher, who had to diagnose and refer those children. I had deaf, poor speech, ADHD, and have been experienced in every phase of learning. I worked with middle and high school in Math but on a one to one basis, I picked up problems that the classroom teacher because I saw them privately and face to face. I reported the poor attention span, poor retention, and other findings. Eventually the school and parent identified the diagnosis and the school and I worked together. These children get lost in the mix and will always need one to one. I also suggest that they take tests not in the classroom and are given more time to finish. Each case is individual and needs to be treated as such.

Kind, Patient and knowledgeable

Debbie is a fun, patient and knowledgeable tutor. My son liked her the first day he met her. She displays quite a bit of enthusiasm and says she loves kids. We had a bad experience with our former tutor who yelled at my son during their sessions. I was outraged and therefore very leery of hiring a new tutor. But so far Debbie has been very attentive. I like that she provides me with an overview of the material they covered in the session. My son said he liked the way she taught him math and that he felt like he understood the material. She gave him a notebook to write down examples to use at home and to have as a guide for later when school begins. Hopefully this will continue to be a positive experience for him whereby in the end he will say he "loves math", LOL

Awesome Tutor!

Debbie is wonderful! She walked Hannah through solving problems step-by-step, and broke it down to make it easier for her. It was great to see her sense of accomplishment being able to manage the problems she did not understand before. Debbie has a great way with kids... from the moment we met her we felt extremely comfortable and it is obvious her number one priority is helping her students achieve their goals. Thank you Debbie!!

Great tutor!

Wow!!! my 17 year old met with Deborah last night and they hit it off. Deborah took the time to talk to me and my son to find out what we were looking for. It was refreshing to meet someone that loved to teach kids. Deborah did not judge him and she was able to make him feel comfortable. I can not say enough good things from our first meeting. Thanks Deborah for taking the time to talk to my son and I know you will be able to get him to where he needs to be.

Knowledgeable and Patient Tutor

Deborah is a wonderful, experienced and patient tutor. She has recently taught my sixth grade daughter how to count on a number line and find the area of many geometrical shapes (triangle, rectangle, trapezoid and parallelogram, etc.) with algebraic formulas. My daughter greatly appreciates Deborah's low/no stress method of teaching and her patience in conveying math subject matter in a different teaching/learning style. I would highly recommend Deborah to anyone looking for a patient and knowledgeable math tutor!
