"But that's easy!" is the response I hope for and often get when I teach. I have been a licensed secondary (grades 6-12) teacher for over ten years. My first career was as a military officer. For some reason, when I retired, my wife of many years informed me that sitting around the house was not an option. Our daughters were in middle and high school at the time. Their dinner table stories about school were, at times, a bit scary. I had all the qualifications to be a long-term substitute teacher; it would get me out of the house and thus please the real boss, and it would horrify our kids; so why not? And so I did.

To my surprise, I enjoyed teaching and was fairly good at it. I went back to school (as an undergraduate!) and filled all the annoying bureaucratic squares. While doing the school work, I "subbed" as much as I could. My experience from all this includes teaching middle school math, pre-algebra, algebra I and II, geometry, high school calculus, U.S. government, American and world history and physics.

Currently, I teach ancient civilizations but I tutor (primarily) math and science in formal programs (which I helped create) before school, during the lunch period and after school. Though our "formal" emphasis has been on those students who were failing, my approach is to also include those kids who want to move from "passing" to an "A."

And yes, I know my photo looks like mug shot. My former students call me "the Old Crab" for a reason.

GRE

GRE

I have much experience in teaching test-taking techniques. All test types have patterns; understanding how to approach the test and plan and practice how you take it can give you a significant edge. The GRE is fairly straightforward in that the emphasis is on reasoning skills and general knowledge. I have found that the best way to prepare is to take practice tests (I have a collection of them), score them, and analyze what works and what does not. We can identify any possible deficit areas and target them directly. An organized and thoughtful approach can overcome test anxiety and get you the scores you want.

As you can see in my profile, I have been teaching at the sixth grade level for over ten years. Though I am primarily a history teacher, teaching reading skills, text structure and reading comprehension is an inherent part of teaching any subject at this level.

Study Skills

I have been awarded multiple academic degrees and certifications. I have been a licensed public school secondary teacher for over twelve years and I am formally certified to teach a variety of subjects. I have successfully tutored students to prepare for the ACT, GRE, GED, and ASVAB. Study skills are mostly a matter of organization, focus and perseverance.

ACT English,

ACT English

I have taught standardized test taking techniques in a formal classroom setting to middle school, high school and adult students. My English background includes teaching the USAF Effective Writing Course to supervisors at all levels. Both of my daughters scored in the top five percentile nationwide on their ACTs. Time management and careful, focused reading and analysis of the questions and answer choices is the key.

Writing

I currently teach essay writing in the context of history/social studies. Some of my academic papers from my undergraduate and graduate days were formally published (though, of course, no one but a few academics actually reads that stuff). During my military career, I was repeatedly tasked (as an additional duty)to teach the "Air Force Effective Writing Course." Good writing involves a set of skills which though subtle, can be taught and learned. It is a skill-set which seems to becoming rare in the modern world. If anything, this makes it more valuable to potential employers.

History

American History,

American History

When I was a kid I was an avid reader in two areas: science fiction and history. Now I read about almost everything, but history and historical fiction still top the list. I served as an intelligence officer in NATO for many years. Thus, in my own small way, I have been part of American history. I am proud of that.
European History,

My graduate work in history focused on European history with particular emphasis on the 19th and 20th century. I currently teach ancient civilizations.
Geography,

I am a licensed secondary teacher (grade 6-12) in history (world and US), geography, US government and social studies. I currently teach social studies and am the Social Studies Chair at my school. It has been said that geography is destiny. It certainly is the underlying driver of much of history.
Government & Politics,

I was an intelligence officer in NATO stationed in Europe for many years and worked with my colleagues from the other NATO nations on a daily basis. I was always fascinated with the interplay in the arena of international politics and the subtleties of perceptions, policies and local politics.
Philosophy,

Philosophy

One of my original BA's was in philosphy. This was something of an accident; I had taken numerous philosphy classes as electives because I was fascinated with the course content. I have found the analytical/skeptical tools of formal classical philosphy have been invaluable to me throughout my life.
Religion,

Religion

One of my original BA's was in Philosophy. At the time, I was fascinated by religion and took numerous related classes. Subsequently, I have taught religion formally in the context of history and social studies. My approach to teaching this potentially controversial subject is one of objectivity; I cover the history, belief system, dogma, and historical significance. I avoid interjecting my personal beliefs.

Very pleased with Steven's tutoring skills!

We had hired Steven to help raise our daughter's ACT score for college admission. He was very professional, always on time for sessions, and explained materials to her in a way that she could understand. He helped to raise her ACT score which was the goal! He has knowledge of multiple subjects, which helps if you need tutoring in more than one subject. We would definitely use his service again if needed! Our daughter was very comfortable with him as her tutor!

Helpful and patient

It was nice having the extra help with my high school student, I was never a math wiz and was struggling trying to re-learn math and help teach it to my kid with an online course he was taking.

Adjusting to students needs

Throughout the recent lessons, Steven was observant enough to see when I was strong in a subject to not spend too much time on those areas. Instead use our time together focusing on the type of problems I need more help with. Steven will customize worksheets to help continue learning after the lesson ends.

Patient, friendly and is making Algebra easier to understand.

My granddaughter is being tutored on Algebra II. I let her choose her tutor from the many responses we received and she is very happy she chose Steven. Even though they've only had one session she came out smiling & feeling like she was going to be okay. She's very happy that she chose him & so am I. First smile I've seen on her in over a month as she's been very stressed out over this class.
