I teach at the University of North Carolina, where I specialize in academic writing, creative writing, and literature. Before coming to UNC, I taught at the University of Houston and the University of Miami. In addition, I scored the AP Language exam for seven years. I can teach English and history to high school and college level students, but I'm also interested in working with non-traditional students. I've worked for years with students on their college entrance essays and personal statements. In addition, I enjoy helping students discover their creative writing skills (I'm a published novelist and screenwriter).

I've taught to all sorts of students, from first generation college kids to the children of politicians. I even once taught a Prince from a country that shall remain unnamed. Yet my approach to each student, no matter their background, is relatively consistent. It isn't experience that determines a successful student, but their willingness to engage with the material and try to make it relevant to their daily life. I hope to help my clients take that next step towards a greater understanding of the material. I also hope that they gain a sort of power over the subject that makes them curious about what comes afterward.

Finally, I like to spend a lot of time talking to my clients, working through the psychology of their academic concerns. This is especially true with writing. Often clients just need to be talked through the writing process in order to see that it isn't a lack of talent holding them back, but a wrong step in the process of composing.
