I've applied my love for the English language by reading and writing throughout my life. I can't imagine a day without reading!
By studying literature, linguistics, composition, creative writing, and journalism, I mastered the skills necessary to achieve excellence in the language and editorial arts.
My skill set is the foundation of my work in the field of scholarly and scientific publishing. By bringing my experience to others as a tutor, I help students to adapt their language skills to real-life educational challenges. The academic and business environments expect much of young people entering college and the work force: writing well is essential!
Through WyzAnt, I specialize in English language arts to support student success and advancement as they prepare for exams and essays, improve their test scores for college entrance, and read and write successfully. I like to work with students of all ages, and I am adept with ESL readers and writers.
My aims are to engage the student's interest in his or her academic task and to design relevant lessons from which they gain valuable knowledge and the chance to apply their learning.
Moreover, as a highly skilled, published writer who has written everything from essays to a master's thesis, I can coach students to write a well-constructed essay or composition, to self-edit their text, and to present their work verbally and visually to an audience.
My style of teaching is patient and non-judgmental. I believe success follows hard work to meet academic challenges. Homework is a given. I provide progress reports to students and parents and welcome their essential feedback.
I hold a Master of Arts in English with an Emphasis in Creative Writing, a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a minor in Journalism, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology, from Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan.
I am a member of Detroit Working Writers, the oldest non-profit for writers and authors in the state of Michigan. I served as President from 2007 to 2011.

Reading,

Reading

As a tutor, pushing a struggling reader is not my style. I like to work within each student’s instructional level until he or she is ready to stretch toward the next level of fluency. I coach and support each student (1) to develop from oral reading fluency to silent reading comprehension, (2) to discover engaging reading materials of interest, (3) to choose written works at his or her instructional level, (4) to acquire problem-solving, or thinking, skills that foster comprehension, and (5) to participate actively in the reading process – using age-appropriate methods and tools. I also help students make the connection between the sounds of the alphabet and the letters they see on a page, using a phonics approach. Once sight and sound are paired, then it is natural that spelling and vocabulary will improve as does the ability to read. I also use language-experience and comprehension problem-solving processes. To help a student – child, teen, or adult – I further encourage family reading, repeated readings of a favorite story, poem, or book, paired reading, and fun activities to promote individual literacy. Academic Background: Wayne State University. Master of Arts in English with an Emphasis in Creative Writing; Bachelor of Arts in English; Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. Professional background: editorial arts, scientific/scholarly publishing, corporate communications, substitute teacher. I am a Member and Past President (2007-2011) of the Detroit Working Writers, a Detroit 300 Heritage Organization and 501(c)6 non-profit.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

My primary strategy as a tutor is to help each student develop a set of study skills: how to use a daily planner, note taking and reviewing, time management, goal setting, reading comprehension, understanding of the lessons, how to ask good questions, and organization. I also believe that concentration and self-motivation are important skills that lead to academic success, and I emphasize the importance of listening as a key responsibility.
Vocabulary,

Vocabulary

My coursework focused on language arts-related subjects: etymology, traditional grammar, linguistics, and writing. I am an excellent speller and reached the district level of competition in the Detroit News Spelling Bee while in grade school. I have extensive experience in writing, editing, and proofreading. I use various strategies and methods for improving vocabulary: an essential tool is reading, which brought me to a love of the English language from an early age. Next to vocabulary, spelling and writing good sentences is important.

SAT Reading,

SAT Reading

As a tutor, I will help students to develop and/or refine their silent reading comprehension skills. Emphasis will be placed on improving his or her ability to work with the two types of multiple-choice questions – sentence completion and comprehension of short and long passages – in the Critical Reading sections of the SAT. If necessary, I will also review the basics of the English language arts – grammar, spelling, word meanings, sentence structure, and punctuation. Strategies to expand the range of vocabulary will also help to increase the test score. I like to work within each student’s instructional level at first and then introduce challenges meant to increase their understanding of what’s expected in each section and to boost their confidence to work quickly and knowledgeably.
SAT Writing,

SAT Writing

As a writing tutor, I am qualified to coach and support students in forming their strategies for the persuasive essay, a section of the SAT’s Writing Component. I will provide a list of practice quotations and prompts meant to encourage organization of a thesis statement, introduction, main ideas, supporting statements, and conclusion. This will help to clarify their thinking about the philosophical nature of the quotations included in the essay section. At least one session will include a review of usage that trips up many a student, e.g., when to use “who” and “whom”, “its” and “it’s”, and “their,” “there,” and “they’re” – just to name a few. Close attention will also be devoted to the other sections of the Writing Component – identifying sentence errors, improving sentences, and improving paragraphs. I will work within each student’s instructional level and encourage further growth and development of their literacy. I consider comprehension, confidence, and pace to be essential to a successful SAT score.

Extremely Knowledgeable, professional, and Courteous

Maureen's initial session with my daughter was remarkable, as she pinpointed her challenges and immediately went to work. Maureen knows her materials and presents them effortlessly too. She is exceptionally knowledgable and very professional, and her courtesy is awe-inspiring. Before the first meeting, she provided a comprehensive plan to help identify my daughter's SAT Reading/Writing challenges. This was followed up with a customized roadmap to address and correct them. We made a great choice and look forward to our future sessions with Maureen. Thank you, Maureen, for being thoughtful and kind.
