I am proud to be an education specialist graduating with a master's degree in education focusing on special education from CSU Chico, an added authorization as a Reading and Language specialist from San Diego Office of Education, and a credential in special education authorizing me to work with mild/moderate and moderate/severe students through National University, Sacramento CA.

My 14 years of teaching experience includes working in a residential facility with a Special Day Class, teaching at a level 12 non-public school for severely emotionally disturbed students, a Resource Specialist Program

position in an international baccalaureate high school, a juvenile hall classroom setting, a
comprehensive middle school campus with a hybrid SDC/RSP style classroom for mild/mod/severe
students and also the virtual classroom, independent study homeschool programs and teaching English as a foreign language for students overseas. I am presently completing an international program focusing on the Orton-Gillingham approach to the Science of Reading, specifically supporting dyslexic students. Each of these settings has been full of colorful people, and I believe they have made me a more solid special education teacher. If nothing else, I am highly adaptable to a wide range of settings.

I pride myself in writing differentiated lesson plans to address a wide variety of needs for specialized academic instruction and Universal Design for Learning. I connect my student assessments, observations, and work samples with their IEP goals and in turn lesson plans to give my students the best possible chance at success in their academics.

I believe that all students are capable of learning. At times it is challenging to find the right combination to free up a student’s mind to expand their understanding of academics, but well worth the effort.

Homeschool

Students require curriculum that matches their learning style. A dedicated adult at home needs to ensure the student adheres to a specific school schedule. Students may need an academic professional, such as a tutor, to support academics if parent is not able to provide the required support. Attending an alternative to traditional brick and mortar schools does not mean that students should stay home and not engage in academic activities on a regular schedule. I have been the special education case manager in virtual homeschool settings over 5 years, and students benefit from continuous academic assessments in order to gauge progress in their curriculum.

Special Needs

ADHD,

ADHD

ADHD is prevalent in the classroom and as an Education Specialist I have 14 years of training and experience working with students living with this unique learning style. I support ADHD students by providing accommodations such as chunking assignments into smaller assignments, frequent breaks, and recommending something quiet to keep their hands busy during learning sessions. ADHD students benefit from a structured assignment by introducing it in a variety of modalities including on a syllabus, a video with examples, modeling the activity, and encouragement/positive reinforcement throughout the lesson.
Dyslexia

Dyslexia

After acquiring my Reading and Language Added Authorization I entered the Orton-Gillingham program through the Institute of Multi-Sensory Education focusing on dyslexia/dysgraphia. Teaching dyslexics requires a multi-sensory approach utilizing tactile, visual, and auditory activities to identify letter/sound relationships including morphology for older students to understand that words have meaning. The student needs to know that dyslexics have a richer, more thorough understanding of the lesson content due to the extra effort required to complete. This student also utilizes 5 times the number of neurons as non-dyslexic students which leads to the deeper understanding of lesson content. Educators need to understand that the dyslexic student may require extra time as an accommodation to complete assignments.
