I have taught reading and phonics for grades K-3 for 16 years. My reading instruction focuses on phonics and comprehension skills based on ability levels. I am trained to use appropriate assessments such as DIBELS and DRA.

As a kindergarten teacher, I have taught handwriting to all of my students. When each new letter is introduced, how to form each letter is specifically and systematically taught. I have worked closely with occupational therapy staff with formation and spacing, as well as many other ideas and suggestions. This assistance has helped both general education and special education students.
Phonics,

Phonics

As a kindergarten teacher, the main objective — especially in the first half of the year — is to focus on letter and sound identification, as well as listening for sounds in words. Having this fluency early on serves as an indicator and foundation for developing reading and writing skills over time. I have been trained in the phonics programs Telian and DiBELS, which include phonemic awareness, phonics, and reading fluency assessment. I have been trained by BSRI (Bay State Reading Institute). I am currently enrolled in an Orton Gillingham training program.

I have been a classroom teacher for 17 years. I have been a teacher of preschool, kindergarten, first, second, and third grade students. Each year my students vary in abilities and needs. I have worked with children with general learning disabilities, children who have been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD, and children on different levels of the autism spectrum. I'm also a mother of a child with ADD. Having students who have differing needs and learning styles, whether on an IEP or not, my instruction varies to accommodate all learners. I have been trained in guided reading, several phonics remediation programs, as well as literacy assessments. This helps guide my instruction and needs of the student.

Reading

Caryn has helped my son with getting caught up for 1st grade reading. He has ADHD and it's hard for him to focus at home. He has fallen behind and needed some extra help. She is very professional, kind and Tanner has really benefited from her help.
