Hi! My name is Katya L. I am a geologist with a soft spot for climbing, herbalism and yoga. I recently received a PhD in Earth Sciences from the University of Southern California (GPA: 3.88). During my studies, I have been a graduate teaching assistant and instructor in several introductory and advanced Geology courses for non-majors, majors and K-12 teachers. The courses that I have taught included Stratigraphy, Earth History, Planet Earth, Introduction to Geology, Death Valley Field Course, and Environmental Issues in Society. I am excited to tutor classes such as Paleontology, Geochemisty, Physical Geology, Microfacies Analysis, Environmental Science, Sedimentology, Stratigraphy, Earth History, and Climate Change.

During my undergraduate and graduate studies, my research was focused on deciphering triggering mechanisms behind the last two mass extinction events (the end-Triassic and the Cretaceous/Paleogene). As a result of my research, I advanced my knowledge in paleontology, geochemistry, sedimentology, stratigraphy, and petrology. I have experience funding my research both for master and doctorate studies through grants and fellowships ($181,650 in total). Thus in addition to teaching, I can assist you with writing grant proposals.

I genuinely enjoy teaching students of all backgrounds, levels, and abilities. By educating others, I strengthen my own knowledge and become inspired in return. The significance of such work does not just apply to expanding scientific knowledge in the field of geology; I seek to aid in the development of experiential, inquiry-based pedagogical approaches that enable students of all ability levels to develop their critical thinking and problem-solving skills in addition to improving their science literacy.
