I am a certified Math 6-12, ESL supplemental and EC-12 LOTE Chinese language teacher in the State of Texas. I have taught Algebra 1 and PreAP Geometry in a SBISD high school. In addition to my public school teaching, I have years of experiences teaching beginner and intermediate Chinese to Adults and young children in a heritage Chinese school in West Houston area. I am also a group and private piano teacher specialized in teaching beginners using Mayron Cole's Piano Method for 10+ years in my home studio. My gift and passion to teach enables me to set example for lifelong learning. I graduated with honor as a cum laude from Cal Poly Pomona majoring in Computer Science with minor in Math. I also received high honor and award with my M.A. degree in Christian Education from DTS.

Believing that each student is unique, I enjoy getting to know my students in order to assess their strengths as well as areas for improvement. My background and experiences in ESL also enhances me to relate and encourage students to adjust and set appropriate steps and goals to reach their full potentials. My philosophy and approach in teaching is to help students to establish a solid foundation first whether it be math skill, language comprehension, or rhythm/sight reading for music, then based on students' abilities and interests to apply and work toward mastery of knowledge, understanding and application toward their learning goals and objectives. I value feedback from both students and parents to ensure a good relational dynamic to promote an active learning process for inquiry and success.

I am flexible to work with students' schedule. Though I have a 24 hours cancellation policy, make up lesson usually can be arranged when notice is given in advance. To ensure the best environment and utilize the resources I have available, I do prefer students to come to my neighborhood location for private lessons or group classes. However, I am willing to travel to another location if the distance is reasonable and not too far.

ESL/ESOL

I am a certified ESL/ESOL supplemental teacher in the State of Texas. My experiences of working with ESL students are mainly through my interactions with students at schools as well as in my church/neighborhood communities. I would like to emphasize both the culture and language aspects of the learning for ESL students due to my other passion in teaching and learning foreign languages. Due to my own bi-culture background and upbringings, I believe immersion is the best approach for language learning. Object lessons, show and tell, live demonstrations are some of my methods to enhance interactions with students of various age levels.

Elementary Math is the foundation for core courses which students will take later on in middle/high school. During one on one tutoring, I'd like to assess students' understanding and skills first, then work with students accordingly to target areas for improvement. For regular school session, I would like to check with the teachers' school calendar to set pace or move in advance in order to assist students to excel in their school works. For summer session, I would like to review previous acquired concepts and skills briefly, then move on to prepare students by introducing new concepts/topics which are essential for the new school year.

Algebra 1 is the foundation course to high school math. You must master the concepts learned in this course to be successful in Geometry, Algebra 2 and beyond. MY QUALIFICATIONS TO TUTOR THIS COURSE • Taught this course in a high school setting. • Tutored this subject both in school and online. • Degrees in Computer Science with minor in Math. • plus… I’m pretty good at it! WHAT *IS* ALGEBRA, ANYWAY? Oh, *so* many answers to that question. Here are a few: • A branch of mathematics that substitutes letters for numbers (think: Captain Crunch Super Decoder Ring!) • A language for expressing abstract concepts (think: French, Latin, Urdu or Esperanto) • A mathematical model of a real-life situation (think: word problems) • A system of mathematical rules for calculating unknown numerical values which meet specified conditions (think: solving equations) I like this last definition most, since it is closest to how we actually use it in this course, and elsewhere. Algebra is a * -- system of rules -- * by which we get stuff done. The rules are consistent (always work the same way), no matter how simple or complex the problem; learn these rules, and how to use them productively, and they will take you far! To quote that great mathematician Buzz Lightyear, “To Infinity, And Beyond!” MY TOP FIVE MATH “TROUBLE TOPICS” Having taught Algebra 1 in high school,I came across the same handful of topics which hold students back year after year because they did not take the time to master them. ALL OF THEM are found in Algebra 1: 1) solving equations 2) word problems 3) systems of linear equations (2 equations, 2 unknowns) 4) equations of lines, and their graphs 5) adding and subtracting negative numbers I can help you become more confident in these areas, because they are so important for your mathematical success! Later courses build on them (and trust me: they lean VERY heavily on this foundation), so it’s best to master them now. Algebra 2

At the high school I taught at, we used this Algebra 2 curriculum listed below as the scope and sequence for teaching the actual course: =============================== I can work with students on any areas which they want to focus or target to aim for the best result in understanding the concepts and mastering through practices and applications. REVIEW SOLVING EQUATIONS AND SYSTEMS * 1 equation, 1 unknown and * 2 equations, 2 unknowns QUADRATIC EQUATIONS: We became EXPERTS at solving ax^2 + bx + c = 0. using three different methods: 1) Quadratic Formula (of course!) 2) Factoring (the NEATEST and SIMPLEST trick I EVER saw makes this EASY and FOOLPROOF!) 3) Completing the Square (for those who need/want the extra rigor) FACTORING HIGHER ORDER EXPRESSIONS: After mastering quadratics, we expanded our factoring repetoire to higher-order functions (x^3, x^4 and beyond) by reducing them to products of first- and second-order expressions. And all of this was to prepare you for... RATIONAL EXPRESSIONS AND EQUATIONS: Around the end of the first semester we finally arrive at the mountain top -- being able to: * find least-common denominator (LCD) and greatest common factor (GCF) of two rational expressions * simplify rational expressions (using all factoring methods) * solve rational equations (including identifying extraneous solutions) RADICAL EQUATIONS AND EXPRESSIONS: The same "simplify expression/solve equation" duality we used for quadratics and rational expressions is harnessed to tame equations containing radicals. * Eliminating Radicals (where possible) * Rationalizing the Denominator * Simplifying Radical Expressions * Solving Radical Equations COMPLEX NUMBERS: Remember the "lie" you were told in second grade about how you can't evaluate 3 - 7, since 7 is bigger than 3? Well, one day you suddenly *could*, and "negative numbers" were born! Similarly, the statement "you can't take the square root of negative numbers" is also going into the dust bin, because we are again expanding our numbering system

Geometry,

Geometry

Geometry is a core subject of my specialty since I have experience of teaching Geometry in school setting. I have also worked with students in various background in tutoring Geometry. One on one tutoring is most effective when areas for improvement can be targeted to work on so lessons can be set up to provide strategies to help students to overcome the obstacles in order to achieve success. Geometry can be a difficult class for many students. sandwiched in most high school curricula between Algebra 1 and Algebra 2, geometry is different from those classes because it calls upon more than just the pure mathematical aptitude the others require. But make no mistake: you DO need solid algebra skills to succeed in geometry,in my experience you also need to be creative, logical and be able to “think” logically, and visualize in 2 and 3 dimensions. I’ve taught this class at the PreAP level, and I can help you if you are committed to work to cross those huddles to race for success.

ALGEBRA 1 TOPIC LIST Here’s a list of what most Algebra 1 courses cover: Introducti
Algebra 2,

ESL/ESOL,

Geometry,

Piano

I have been teaching private and group lesson in my home studio using the Mayron Cole piano method for more than 10 years and my specialty is teaching beginner and intermediate piano in private, semi-private or small group setting. I also serve as a pianist and vocalist at my church for more than 10 years. I am a certified Mayron Cole Piano Method Instructor since 2005.
SAT Math,

SAT Math

SAT Math is a crucial element for the SAT test. As a math teacher/tutor, I like to work with students by first assessing their test taking ability with sample test, target on areas which students may need help the most, then work on test taking strategies to enhance test scores. When it comes to SAT or ACT or any other type of test preparations, I believe firmly in "Practice, Practice, Practice!!!"
Study Skills

Study Skills

I am a certified teacher with experience teaching students in public schools. I taught study skills to students both in the classroom or in tutorials after school on regular basis because study skills are the essential tools to implement success in academic studies of all subject areas. While in school as a student, I was always able to maintain top grades in all subjects and I attribute good study skills to my success. Whether it is note taking, time management or organizational skills, I believe they are all essential tools for any good students. My tutoring session for study skills, therefore, will include: Effective note taking Effective reading and concentration techniques Create a binder to organize course work Effective time management techniques Test taking skills I would love to pass on my experience and knowledge of study skills to help students particularly in building a solid foundation for life long learning. To enhance the interaction with students, I also would recommend a book reading as an option to motivate and discuss the related topics with the students.

Awesome Music Teacher - Professional, Organized, Patient & Detailed!

Mrs. Cheryl has been extremely patient with my 4 year old daughter in setting up her 1st piano class and 28 week program. Since initially contacting Mrs. Cheryl through WyzAnt, she has presented us with a curriculum that has my daughter enthusiastic about learning music. Shortly after her first lesson, my daughter appeared to understand the basic concepts of the piano and is able to identify rhythms. I look forward to continuing piano lessons with Mrs. Cheryl and higher recommend her services to anyone interested! Satisfied Customer!

Excellent teacher!

Cheryl is very patient and skilled and that is very important. I am only a beginner and an older adult student. Cheryl coached me through the critical pronunciation and tones of Mandarin Chinese. In a short time, she had me feeling comfortable with my ability to learn and speak the language. I recommend her to anyone who wants to learn!

Good 09/06/14 Lesson

Cheryl is very organized and I'm hopeful she can teach my stepson to organize his school work. Then, she can actually tutor him on school subject matter.

Great Tutor

I am a 46 year old returning student taking College Algebra. In my youth, I took this class three times and had to drop it because I just do not have an easy time with math. I contacted Cheryl for help and was very pleased with her approach. She made sacrifices to meet me at a time and place that was convenient for me and was very patient during the lessons. She explained things in a manner that was easy for me to understand and helped me a great deal. I have no problem recommending her for any subject in which she is qualified to tutor.
