I am a firm believer that there are no "stupid" questions. Instead, it is a matter of students not completely grasping the material and I encourage them to ask as many questions as necessary until they understand the concepts being covered. Chemistry can be a challenging subject for many students due to the conceptual nature of the material. However, once it has been mastered, it can be fun. I am a firm believer that there are no "stupid" questions. Instead, it is a matter of students not completely grasping the material and I encourage them to ask as many questions as necessary until they understand the concepts being covered. My goal as a tutor is to help students understand how chemistry relates to their lives since introductory courses can come across as boring.

I like to use analogies to help explain difficult concepts, and I try to lead students to discover the answer on their own rather than simply providing them with answers to the problems they are working on. Sometimes this will require backing up to review a concept covered earlier in the class in order to master current material. My objective is for students to understand the "why" aspect of the subject instead of simply memorizing facts. If students understand how a concept works, they can apply that knowledge to related problems and solve them on their own, which leads to greater understanding of the subject and fewer mistakes on quizzes and exams.

I have taught and tutored general chemistry & organic chemistry for more than ten years. Unlike most tutors, I have worked as a practicing research chemist for ~25 years. In addition I am a licensed chemistry teacher, having completed my student teaching in a college prep chemistry classroom. This unique combination means that I KNOW the subject area, can RELATE concepts to "real world" applications, and UNDERSTAND how to help students improve their mastery over the subject. I can also help students with their lab-related questions since I am a practicing research chemist.

  • Rate details: There is a 1 hr. minimum meeting fee. Tutoring beyond 1 hr. will be billed on a prorated basis. Cancellation requires 4 hrs. advance notice or the session will be billed for 1 hr. time.

Great tutor!

We hired Meg to tutor our daughter who is taking organic chemistry as a pre-pharmacy requirement. Our daughter is an incredibly strong student overall, but was feeling frustrated and began losing her confidence as the course work was progressing. We have hired tutors in the past for our other daughter and believe that a fresh one on one approach is often beneficial in their academic success. Meg has already surpassed our expectations within the first couple meetings with our daughter. In our daughter's words: Meg is incredibly intelligent and a true professional. She gets down to business right away and quickly accesses the student and their needs. Meg is helping my kiddo with orgo. She has gone out of her way to make sure that she understands where the gaps are, provides good detailed education on hard to understand orgo topics like reaction mechanisms and is willing to meet when my kid is available and work with her schedule. She literally did 6 lessons (one a day) in a row to get her prepared for an exam and has offered to meet with her to get her up to speed on topics she didn’t grasp from earlier in the semester. She gets right down to business during the sessions and the online format seems to work well.
