After thirty years of living in Tokyo, Japan, where I performed the above-noted work, I'm now based in the San Francisco Bay Area and can work with you online and, in San Francisco and some locations nearby, in-person as well.

I focus, especially, in both my editing and instruction, on helping you learn how to best convey your intended meaning – from the sentence- to the essay- and thesis-level – in the most effective manner possible in terms of grammar, vocabulary, compositional style, organization, and otherwise. I clearly show all deletions from and additions to your draft, with explanations where helpful, so that you can actually learn from my change suggestions and begin to incorporate them into your own writing even when you don’t request my services. (I'm happy to offer a brief (10-15 minute) demonstration lesson free-of-charge, on the Wyzant interface, to illustrate how I show my change suggestions.)

(I received an A+ in a graduate level course in Pedagogical English Grammar as a non-degree student at Columbia University's Teachers College.)

If you feel you might be interested in my services, please don't hesitate to contact me (via the Wyzant interface) with any requests or questions you may have. I invite you to empower yourself, through my tutoring support, in your English communication skills.

CV (minus contact information, per Wyzant guidelines) provided upon request.

I will help you optimize your grammar to convey your intended meaning in the clearest, most effective way possible. Decades of grammar-focused studies and professional experience in academia, government, and the corporate world bring versatility to my teaching, proofreading, and editing skills for grammar (and other subjects as well). I received an A+ in a graduate level course in Pedagogical English Grammar at Columbia University's Teachers College. My undergraduate (Stanford University, B.A. in English) and law school (Vanderbilt Law School, J.D.) studies also included a substantial focus on grammar. I clearly show all grammar-related (and other) deletions from and additions to your work, with explanations where helpful, so that you can actually learn from my change suggestions and begin to incorporate them into your own writing even when you don’t request my services.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Thank you, John! John worked on editing my daughter's essay together and on the conclusion. John reviewed and gave suggestions line by line during the class. My daughter said it was very helpful and she learned a lot from the class.

John B. is a great tutor

After a couple of classes with John I can say that I am very glad I chose him as Tutor. John is very clear and didactic. He immediately understood my needs and had no problem working with me in my own way.
