I hold a B.S. in Secondary Education, with an emphasis in English. I've had training in English language learning as well as academic, business and creative writing. I publish content on several online platforms, and I write freelance with an international web content firm. I studied for and passed the GED exam with a high score that earned me a full 60 hour college scholarship. I can help walk you through the process of getting your GED as well as getting a successful start in college, while balancing life.

I’m a mom to 7 kids, with 6 grandchildren and many creative hobbies. I like to research and write, and I enjoy being a student myself! I maintained a 4.0 college GPA, while also being enrolled at a university, where I maintained a 3.8 GPA. I was on both the President’s list and the Dean’s list and my work has been published in 2 college publications.

What's my specific intent for my students? It’s to empower them and instill in them a sense of pride, accomplishment and capability. One of the most essential things that a teacher can do is teach her students how to fish, rather than just giving them a fish. In this way, her students will always be able to accomplish and succeed on their own! If I had to explain what my teaching “specialty” is, I’d say that it’s meeting my students where they’re at and moving them forward in their understanding and skills. I firmly believe that no matter the level of comprehension or struggle, every student can move forward and learn. It’s my extreme privilege and honor to have the opportunity to teach others.

Needlework

My mother taught me how to knit, crochet and embroider when I was 8 years old, and I’ve been enjoying those arts ever since. I grew up deeply admiring Erica Wilson (okay, this dates me) and I’m absolutely in love with the experience of creating beautiful and useful things with a needle and thread. I’ve been practicing the arts of crewel, embroidery, cross-stitch, knitting, crocheting and beadwork for more than 40 years. I have an online boutique, where I sell my beaded flowers and jewelry, crafted with attention to detail and passion. I want this for my students: to learn the arts of a needle and thread and to craft beautiful and useful things that will last. Creating is quite empowering, and allows for self-expression. I'd like to help you achieve that!

Cooking,

Cooking

Sadly, my parents divorced when I was 14. As the oldest of five, I had the difficult job of helping my single mother. Although I was comfortable around small children, I had to learn the new tasks of cooking, cleaning and watching my siblings. When I married young, I threw myself into keeping house, and I’ve enjoyed cooking and baking for more than 37 years. Due to the dietary and the health needs of my family, I know how to cook vegetarian, low-fat, low-salt, organic and high-nutrition, as well as basic, old fashioned fare. I have an extensive collection of cookbooks that I read for pleasure (but isn’t all reading pleasure?) and to get new ideas from. Teaching students how to bake and cook is like teaching them how to fish, because they’ll always know how to feed themselves and care for others. Once the basic skills are mastered, nothing can stop their growth and imagination. I firmly believe that mastery over the basics can help students develop an appreciation for independence.

Sewing

Sewing

I’ve been sewing since I was about 10 years old, when my father bought me my own Singer from a second hand store. It was then that I started making my own Barbie™ Doll clothes, and I’ve been hooked ever since. My most luscious memory of sewing is watching my mother float down the stairs in a purple velvet dress ensemble that she had made for a wedding. She looked like a queen! When I had my daughter more than 37 years ago I decided that I’d make her clothes, as well. We can accomplish amazing things when we make items for ourselves! This is what I wish for my students: to be freed from the need to rely on store-bought clothing and accessories. I make home décor, I quilt, I make clothing and I make accessories. For six years, I was the sole costume designer and creator for our large church holiday productions. I spent many years as a hired seamstress and I taught private sewing lessons. I like to think that someday, I’ll be as skilled as my mother.
