Elementary (K-6th)

I've worked with elementary school students for the past 15 years, helping my own children (now in college) with their homework and tutoring younger children in math and English skills. I work in three different libraries and one private elementary school with children in 3rd-8th grade, primarily developing their math and vocabulary skills. From simple addition and subtraction, I continue into more complex math skills. The students learn how probability can influence decision-making, ways to solve basic word problems, and methods to solve problems more quickly. I also teach students how to use language correctly and effectively, both in sentence structure and in composing essays. I like to include puzzles and games in my teaching, making the lesson entertaining for the student as well as educational. Scrabble, for example, can reinforce math skills and introduce vocabulary. I have an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop, and I have worked as an editor for over thirty years.

College Counseling

For the past five years I have specialized in helping students research and apply to colleges. I have a good sense of the differences between many colleges and have visited approximately thirty colleges. My specialty is helping students with college essays. My background as an editor for the past thirty years helps give me the ability to improve students' work while letting their unique voice still speak. I also teach composition and literature at four colleges, so I have a depth of experience in working with college-level writing. My own sons attended the University of Chicago, one of the top universities in the United States. When they were accepted, the admissions officers commented on the excellence of their essays. I have helped dozens of students with their college applications, shepherding them through all stages of this complicated process. From analyzing each school for "fit" to assuring that each application adequately demonstrates interest, I helped these students present themselves at their best to increase the probability for acceptance. I look forward to helping more students with the college-admission process.
