One-on-one tuition allows a student room to breathe and test their skills and understanding not without fear of failure, but without fear of the negative consequences that failure in a classroom setting can entail.

My tutoring philosophy is Socratic—I believe in asking students questions to let them find their way to the correct and logical answer, and in them asking ME questions to further their own understanding of a concept. I am studied in patience, and will not fill out your child's homework or feed them material they are struggling with just because it takes a long time for them to grasp it. My goal is for a student to learn not just the material from any given school day, but also the confidence in their own ability to comprehend new subjects when working without a tutor's support.

My tutoring experience is broad, both in subject and student age.

Beyond my experience through WyzAnt, I have:

- volunteered as a reading and math tutor in kindergarten, first- and second-grade classrooms;

- worked with older elementary and middle school kids on math, English, science, and foreign languages;

- worked with high schoolers on French and English, as well as on SAT, ACT, and IB skills;

- tutored adult foreign Humphrey Fellowship professionals in English through the American English Institute at the University of Oregon;

- been an undergrad writing assistant for literature courses, as well as a Graduate Teaching Fellow in literature, Sociology, history, Humanities, and Russian language courses;

- worked with kids ages 7-18 in French, Russian, and English language immersion programs through the Concordia Language Villages organization.

As far as my language instruction training, I not only love languages, but thoroughly understand how to go about learning them most efficiently. Language is an inherently social endeavor, and I believe in conversation and immersion as the fore

I have over ten years of experience speaking Russian, and several years' experience teaching it, at both a college and a primary/secondary level (with Concordia Language Villages). My MA and BA are both in Russian Studies, and I began learning the language in high school through the International Baccalaureate program, for which I also had to pass an AP-equivalent language exam to graduate. I have been a freelance tutor and translator, and continue, even out of school, to read, write, and communicate in Russian.

I was a math, writing, and reading tutor for all elementary age groups throughout all four years of undergrad, with support training from my campus' volunteer center. In addition, I have worked with ages 5-13 in foreign language acquisition in several formats, including summer camp immersion, one-on-one lessons, and freelance beginner courses. I am also a certified substitute teacher for all grade levels in the state of Wyoming.

In addition to maintaining a 4.0 average throughout k-12 and making valedictorian—all of which depended on a mastery of study skills and test taking strategies—I was a writing assistant as an undergraduate, a Graduate Teaching Fellow as a graduate, and have tutored students ages 7 to undergraduate level in languages, math, reading, and history, focusing particularly on the mechanics behind how to learn a concept, not just individual tasks.

Great tutor

Great tutor with a lot of patience. Her teaching style made her feel more at ease about taking her SAT’s. She also made sure to give her some material and feedback that she could use at home. We really look forward to working with her again in the near future.

Alexis is the BEST!!!!

There are no other words to describe her. Alexis has been my son's tutor off and on since 6th grade and he is now in the 11th grade. She is consistent, reliable and I trust her with my kid. She always gives him that push that he needs to stay motivated and over the years, as the work has become more and more complex, she has been able to continue tutoring him, because she's a wiz...just all around smart and knows her stuff. I don't know the old or the new math (LOL), and am often unable to assist my son when he is confused or about to have a melt down, because he desperately needs help. At any time, I can reach out to Alexis and she is there to the rescue. From the moment she first step foot into our home, she and my son connected and his grades instantly began to increase. Quite frankly, I don't know what I would do without her. I wholeheartedly believe she is a huge part of the reason my son does as well as he does in school.
