Despite the apparent and real difficulty of the test, the test can be taught and learned in a way that will dramatically and consistently improve your score. By focusing on the logical inferences and patterns which are repeated over and over on the test, I can help you achieve mastery of the test, which will vastly improve your confidence and your score.

I have tutored students for other standardized test, but the LSAT, the king of high stakes tests, remains my primary interest and focus. Specifically, I seek to improve the skill set of my students so that the test becomes an exercise of well-trained understanding of the material and the tool kit to really handle it.

Vocabulary,

Vocabulary

I have always had a knack for vocabulary and a passion for the written word. This affinity helped me achieve a perfect score on the verbal section of the GRE. More importantly, I have a gift for imparting my understanding of words to others. My approach is example based and interactive. I pride myself on helping my students grasp the meaning of words with an emphasis on nuance and correct idiom, so that they understand what words mean and how to  actually use them in various contexts. So I teach students how to actually work with words in practice, rather than to merely parrot dictionary definitions.

Logic

Logic

I have studied both formal logic (symbolic logic) as well as informal logic at the undergraduate and graduate level. Accordingly, I am qualified to teach logic at all levels, up to and including high level college courses. I can help you grasp the concepts clearly, and develop your proficiency in applying the rules of formal logic to test validity, understand proofs, and if you are in a higher level course, work with modal rules and proofs.

Test Preparation

LSAT,

LSAT

I can teach you the skills necessary to succeed on the LSAT. My own LSAT testing record is one of consistent excellence, spanning decades. I first took the test 20 years ago and most recently this past October, and I've always scored in the 99th percentile by working on the fundamental skills that produce LSAT success. I will help you learn these basic logical skills and patterns of inference which are repeatedly tested on the LSAT, and by mastering them you will have both the confidence and underlying competence to score well consistently. Also, I have a strong background in logic and the close reading of texts, both essential to success on the LSAT. I developed this proficiency through my study of philosophy, with an emphasis on analysis using the tools of formal and informal reasoning. I have a BA in philosophy from Hamilton College, where I graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1987, and an MA in philosophy from NYU, which I earned in 1992. In addition, I have privately tutored the LSAT for years and have consistently helped my students improve their scores.
