Bio

My name is Phillip Manning, and I have a PhD in physical chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I have teaching experience and have been an independent tutor since 2011. I have also written five books on chemistry and physics (available on Amazon) for advanced high school students and provided solutions to thousands of math and science problems for Chegg, the student solutions website.

I have also written five books on chemistry and physics (available on Amazon) for advanced high school students and provided solutions to thousands of math and science problems for Chegg, the student solutions website.
I work with high school and college students, assisting them in physics, chemistry, and mathematics. I especially enjoy preparing students for standardized tests, such as the GRE, SAT, ACT, GMAT, and ASVAB. I believe that the one-on-one relationship between student and tutor can help a student in a way that no other teaching method can. An experienced tutor can assess a student's strengths and weaknesses and develop a uniquely designed course of study for that student. For some, this includes remedial work in mathematics.
Finally, I believe that a problem-centered approach, combined with one-on-one tutoring, is the best way to learn. Ratings and comments by over fifty students shows that they agree.
I enjoy my work and look forward to hearing from you.

GRE,

GRE

I love tutoring the GRE. Over the years, I have developed a course that has substantially improved the scores of many students. Here is how one of them put it: "I increased my GRE Quant by 7 points! Got a 158. Thank you for all your help." For reference: 7 points is about a 20% improvement.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I consider Algebra 1 to be a very important foundation course that helps students in many ways. I have tutored too many students who were having trouble in math and science classes because they had a less than solid background in algebra. A good tutor will help. Phillip Manning, PhD
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I have tutored Algebra 2 more frequently than any other high school course. This course is especially important to students because it is the key to excelling in the ACT and SAT exams that they will take later. For me, it is a pleasure to watch young minds grapple with and succeed in math.
Calculus,

Calculus

This is a big year for high school calculus students, I have already tutored three, so I am well prepared for another one. Hope we can get together. Phillip Manning, PhD
Chemistry,

Chemistry

Chemistry is my strongest subject, probably because I had a wonderful mentor in physical chemistry at UNC. Because of Dick Jarnagin I was able to get a PhD and a great job! I hope I can pass on his wisdom and enthusiasm to other students.
Physics,

Physics

Physics is my all-time favorite subject. I enjoy teaching physics to students who want to learn physics, as well as those who must take it in order to achieve their goals.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

Along with algebra, this is my favorite math course. It is practical, down-to-earth mathematics. And it is crucial step for students who intend to take physics or chemistry.
SAT Math,

SAT Math

This, along with the GRE, is my favorite standardized test. I love working through the problems and then writing the solutions in a way that makes the answers clear to my students. Based on my ratings, most of them agree!

I have tutored dozens of high school and college students in all aspects of precalculus, including trigonometry. It is my favorite math subject. It is the foundation for not only more advanced math courses but also for most science courses. It is also the single most important course that students need to do well in the quantitative parts of the ACT, SAT and GRE tests.

Great tutor

Very helpful tutor. Very patient and through. We reviewed numerous practice problems and reviewed mistakes. We also reviewed test taking strategies. I would highly recommend this tutor.

Very Helpful

He helped me with chemistry and really helped me master several topics. He makes sure I understand one topic before continuing onto the next, and the exercise probelms he chooses challenges me to think more deeply.

Great start, excellent communication process.

Katie feels much more confident already and is relieved to have made a good start to this problem set! Thanks for working us in on the holiday weekend.
