** It's time to get started on essays for New York Times Spring 2023 Editorial Writing Contest!***
I've taught several classes on writing essays for competitions; some past students have won awards.

COLLEGE APPLICATION ESSAYS:
I can help you craft a creative, compelling essay that showcases your strengths and individuality. We will take into consideration what the admissions folks are looking for and use some marketing savvy, but in the end it's all about you. I won't write it for you ... but I'll do everything I can to help you write an essay that will do you proud.

My students have been accepted at American University, Bates College, Boston College, Boston University, Bowdoin, Brandeis, Carnegie-Mellon, Colby, Emory, Johns Hopkins, NYU, Northeastern, Princeton, Smith, Tufts, Tulane, UMass-Amherst, UGeorgia, UMichigan, USC, UT-Austin, Villanova, Wellesley College, and Yale.
WRITING: middle and high school, college
From choosing a thesis to logical structure to a memorable conclusion, I provide guidance for your essay on any topic you need to tackle.
HIGHER LEVEL/BUSINESS/MARKETING WRITING
I've helped MIT MBA candidates with their theses, doctors with their research proposals, and career changers with their resumes and cover letters. Need to write better memos? An advertising campaign? An annual report? I can help.
SATs
You'll learn how to decide between two answers that both seem correct, make sense of the passages written in Ye Olde English, and tell the difference between a colon and semi-colon.

Helping students get their writing assignments done on time is one of my specialties. First, I show students how a few minutes of brainstorming when they first get an assignment is a low-stress way to get their ideas on paper, get their brain to start working on the assignment, and overcome the blank page. Then, I teach students how to get started and budget their time so that they have time for revisions, the key to good writing. I help each student develop their own check list of grammar and style points, built on their writing weaknesses, teacher feedback, and the assignment requirements. How do I know how to do this? Well, I was an A student in every writing class I ever took in elementary school through AP English and college level Shakespeare etc. I have a master's in journalism from Harvard, and I've been writing for a living for 20 years. I've also taken several courses on creative writing that focus on ways to beat writer's block and get your best ideas on paper.

I have 99.9% perfect grammar and can explain the rules clearly. I've developed test-taking strategies that I'll tailor to they way you think. I've written and edited more essays than anyone else you know. I have a BA from Michigan and an MA in Journalism from Harvard, over 20 years of professional writing experience, and almost 10 years of experience helping students prepare for the SAT and ACT reading comp, grammar, and essay writing sections.

I've studied the new essay in-depth and have taught a class locally. I find that very few schools are teaching students to write rhetorical essays, and that the big prep companies' classes are teaching a formula that doesn't exactly work. How could one formula work for essays on any possible topic written in a variety of possible styles? Students need to learn to focus on both the details and the big picture, prioritize information, and make adjustments to the formula that make sense for the task at hand.

I've been a writer since I first learned how to hold a pencil. I'm a published writer with an MA in Journalism and over 25 years of writing and editing experience. I will teach you how to write clearly, concisely, and compellingly, whether you need help with middle school and high school essays, college papers, dissertations, or business writing. My specialities include college application essays and the ACT & SAT exam essays. I'm also a fastidious and thoughtful editor, and volunteer as a tutor in the Boston Public Schools.

Responsive and patient tutor

I wish I hired Abby sooner! I was struggling to condense my application essay for accelerated nursing programs to meet the 500 maximum word count. She patiently worked with me to target my writing weaknesses, organize my ideas, and present them in a clear and concise manner. My writing progressed in two sessions with her significantly faster than they did in a month with my university’s free writing tutor. She was attentive, responsive, and had a great sense of humor to keep the sessions lighthearted and comfortable
