I am a trained physician assistant who has practiced clinically in this field for 23+ years. In my caring for people as I help them get well, I spent a great deal of time teaching people about their problems, how to get well quicker AND how to prevent illness again. I guess in this nature I have taught all my adult life. I found myself drawn to teaching children of all ages and their parents about their problems through talking, drawings that they could take home, copies of any imaging studies with age level explanations for show and tell and I even show up at show and tell if requested. I just love to see the "aha" moment come into a child's eyes or face when they get it. It is the warmest feeling in my heart to know I have just allayed fears and helped a child understand at their level what they are going through.

I have taught formally to medical students, nursing and nurse practitioner students, PA students and all other types of allied health students. But I have also taught children in their classrooms (invited by the children, parents or the teacher). I have also lectured to medical schools, PA schools, nurse practitioner schools, grand rounds at the hospital and a large number of would be specialists (resident cohorts). I always bring my lectures to them back to the patient. Each patient and family group MUST understand the process of injury and healing so that the body will work with them to heal. We all have the potential to heal. Just as we all have the potential to learn. Each person needs a different approach to presenting the information. I particularly love to work with 2 - 4 year olds enriching their natural play with learning to investigate, setting up simple experiments to prove their own hypotheses and discussing why something did or did not work and how to fix it.

I am able to find many ways to break down a problem into little chunks to help the child understand each chunk and then put it together into the whole. I also am able to use items that a child likes to play with to hel

Science

Anatomy,

Anatomy

My work as a surgical physician assistant required learning anatomy with the medical students at Yale and utilizing it daily in practice. I have practiced as a Physician Assistant for more than 20 years. With each patient I do a physical exam - either complete (head to toe) or focused, problem addressed. I use a cased-based method of teaching to give each client a scenario onto which to hook the new information. Sometimes it is a significantly serious scenario; but other times it can be a silly scenario - people never forget the easy way for Mom to get a pea or a bean out of a child's nostril. Ask me about it and I will tell you.

Microbiology,

Microbiology

I took many hours of microbiology during my PA student years at Yale school of Medicine. we took the same course as the med student. As I practice each day working with patients, I use my many hours of micro learned in school and more learned each day I work. It is one of those subjects vital to the practice of medicine and dentistry.
Pharmacology,

Pharmacology

During my PA training I received 80 graduate course hours in Pharmacology; I study articles on new pharmaceutical products every day; to be competent in my job, I must master the bevy of new meds on the market both esoteric and for the treatment of orphan diseases. But, as a PA I still have to recertify nationally with 100 hrs of continuing education credit 8-10 of which need to be in pharmacology; I also must recertify by national exam in family practice - even though I specialize in surgery, I test in the broad specialty of all - Family Practice. Every PA does. Keeps me up to date on pharmacology
Physiology,

Physiology

Physiology and anatomy were courses I excelled in during high school, college and Physician Assistant school. I use them every day and are an integral part of my being. I have also taught many subjects on a graduate school level including physiology and anatomy. I love to teach using a real world case based method to help students find a way to remember new and intensive information. I've been teaching in the classroom as well as precepting clinically using this method. I find students really remember the data much betterthis way.
Zoology

Zoology

My qualifications in zoology include this as my major in college. I was lucky enough to do 3 honors studies that I developed with the assistance of my college adviser and scientists in the community. 1. Regrowth of limbs in certain lizards and the relationship to humans. 2. Human respiratory physiology working with a team of researchers from Mass General Hospital on the diving reflex of seals. I supported that team while they were in Antarctica. 3. Research in rheumatoid arthritis in rats at the electron microscope level.

Ms. Ina has gotten me through didactic on so many occasions. She is one of the reasons i made it this far in my journey!! She is so, so knowledgeable and great with explaining concepts and filling in those knowledge gaps. She is patient and allows space to interactively learn. She has gotten me through pharm, clin med, H&P , the OSCE’s, and many more. She gives great study tips and encouragement along the way. I am now in clinical rotation and will be utilizing Ina’s knowledge along the way, so worth the investment.

Excellent Tutor

Ina Cushman is very thorough and provides excellent guidance when studying for exams. Ina helped me not only with remembering certain characteristics of a disease topic, but truly made me understand the pathophysiology behind it. As I progressed in my sessions with Ina, I began to ask more detailed questions and build my critical thinking skills. Ina is also very good at communicating with the student and makes sure everyone is on the same page. Ina's impact extends well beyond tutoring and once you have a session with her I am confident you will under why.
